Earth Day – Earth Day

When, where and how to celebrate it

Would you like to know what Earth Day is and how you can celebrate it? Fantastic! Here in our ultimate guide, we’ve put together everything you need to know about Earth Day.

What is Earth Day?

Also known as “Earth Day”, Earth Day is an occasion to celebrate our planet.

It is a small reminder that we all live on the same planet. And that we need to pay attention to him – more on this below.

In short:

When we celebrate the earth, we also celebrate life. And we all love life in some way, don’t we?

Now you know what Earth Day is. Do you already know when it is?

When is Earth Day?

Earth Day is celebrated in Germany and 174 other countries every year on April 22.

Each year, the celebration has a specific theme. The aim of the campaign is to create a greater awareness of nature and promote appreciation for the environment.

The smartest scientists on our planet say that now is our last chance to save our planet. It’s definitely time to act!

Earth Day – a brief history

Did you know that the first Earth Day in 1970 was celebrated by over 20 million people?

The first mention of dedicating one day a year to our planet was at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco in 1969.

A month later, the idea was adopted by US Senator Gaylord Nelson and activist Denis Hayes, and became known as “Earth Day”. Denis Hayes turned out to be a marketing and PR genius, and developed the idea into something much bigger than anyone could have imagined.

Activist Denis Hayes

Earth Day 1970 became the biggest one-day protest in the history of mankind!

But that was not all: in 1990 Hayes made the day international and organized events in 141 countries around the world!

In 2020, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day was celebrated by over 100 million people.

Earth Day is the most widely celebrated secular holiday in the world today.

Earth Day in Germany

Of course we also celebrate Earth Day here in Germany!

Every year, Earth Day in Germany has a special leitmotif for a wide range of activities relating to environmental and climate protection. It’s meant to be an inspiration for people to try out sustainable hacks and make lasting changes in their lives.

The international motto for Earth Day 2024 is:

“Planet vs Plastic”

And the German motto for Earth Day is:

“Water makes life possible”

Earth Day offers us a great opportunity to question how we currently live and how we can reduce our impact on the environment.

Earth Day fun facts

Now you know the story of Earth Day, here are some facts:

1. the naming of the Earth Day

Originally, the plan was to call the Earth Day “Environmental Teach-In”. Understandably, this did not stick and so Hayes looked for a more suitable name.

Denis Hayes had a coffee with Julien Koenig, the man behind Volkswagen’s “Think Small” campaign (the campaign for the Volkswagen Beetle, which is one of the most successful advertising campaigns). In a joint brainstorming session, they looked for catchy brand names for an environmental awareness day.

The story is that Koenig had four ideas: “Ecology Day”, “Environment Day”, “Earth Day” and “E Day”.

“Earth Day” was his personal recommendation because it rhymes with “birthday” and April 22 is Koenig’s birthday.

So that’s how Earth Day came about.

2. the date for Earth Day

John McConnell, who had the original idea for Earth Day, suggested March 21. March 21 is the day of the equinox, the astronomical beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere.

But Gaylord Nelson and Denis Hayes opted for the April 22. And they were much, much better at marketing and PR. That is the only reason why Earth Day on April 22 and not on March 21.

Did Julien Koenig also have a hand in this? After all, April 22 was also his birthday. A great way to leave a legacy.

Ultimately, it’s all about marketing. Even when it comes to saving our planet.

3. day of the earth vs. day of the tree

As the name suggests, we celebrate trees on Arbor Day. In Germany, it falls on April 25.

Although the first Arbor Day was celebrated worldwide in 1594 – and is therefore hundreds of years older than Earth Day – Earth Day became much better known.

As I said, marketing is a decisive factor…

The three most popular Earth songs

Have you heard about Arbor Day and would like to find out what exactly this day is all about and how you can celebrate it?

Then you’ve come to the right place: we’ve summarized everything you need to know in our ultimate guide to Arbor Day.

Let’s dive straight into the day of the trees.

What is the day of the tree?

Before we look at how tree love can be celebrated, let’s first tell you what Arbor Day actually is.

In the simplest sense, Arbor Day is a day when we celebrate trees.

We don’t want to bore you with a long philosophical monologue about the importance of trees (although our founder Chris would really love that!).

Thank you for the picture, Maja!

So let’s just say: Arbor Day is the perfect opportunity to let out the tree hugger in you.

So, now you know what the day of the tree is. But do you know when it is?

When is the day of the tree?

In Germany, Arbor Day is celebrated every year on April 25.

Did you know that this decade is very important for the environment? Some of the world’s brightest scientists are warning that now is our last chance to save our planet.

In this article about the “Twentrees” (the decade that will save our planet), you can find out more about why it is still worth remaining optimistic and what role trees play in climate change.

Tree love around the world – When is Arbor Day in other countries?

The date of Arbor Day varies in different countries. Some countries even celebrate trees for whole weeks!

Here is a rough overview of the dates on which Arbor Day is celebrated in other countries.

Australia

In Australia, Arbor Day is celebrated on June 20.

And because Australians really understand the importance of trees (have you ever been to the outback?!), they also celebrate a National Tree Day (on the last Sunday in July) and a National Schools Tree Day (on the last Friday in July), in addition to Arbor Day.

And hey, if that’s not enough, the Australian state of Victoria is celebrating a whole week of trees.

Canada

Let’s plant a tree, shall we?

Canadians celebrate their National Forest Week during the last full week in September.

The actual day of the tree is on the last Wednesday in September (also known as Maple Leaf Day in Canada).

And then there are a few states that love trees so much that they simply need a few extra days.

Ontario celebrates Tree Week from the last Friday in April to the last Sunday in May.

Prince Edward Island marks its Arbor Day on the third Friday in May, during Arbor Week.

And Calgary celebrates trees on the first Thursday in May.

USA

In the USA, National Arbor Day is always celebrated on the last Friday in April.

The very first Arbor Day was celebrated in the USA on April 10.

The current date for Arbor Day was not decided until 1970. At the 100. To mark the 50th anniversary, President Richard Nixon set the date for Arbor Day for the last Friday in April.

Great Britain

In the UK, National Tree Week is usually around the end of November.

The story of the day of the tree

In Germany, the first official Arbor Day was celebrated on April 25, 1952.

On this day, Federal President Theodor Heuss and the President of the German Forest Protection Association (SDW), Federal Minister Robert Lehr, planted a maple tree in Bonn’s Hofgarten.

Since then, Arbor Day has been celebrated on the same day every year and millions of trees have been planted by nature lovers throughout Germany over the past 70 years.

But that’s enough history now! Now it’s time for our fun facts and 12 super activities to celebrate Arbor Day!

Three fun facts about the Day of the Tree

So, now all the statistics and figures are out of the way. And because we don’t just make sustainability easy at Click A Tree, but fun too, here are three day of the tree fun facts.

1. the oldest day of the tree in the world

The oldest Arbor Day in the world is not the one in the United States, as so many people would assume. Although it was founded in 1872 and is therefore already 150 venerable years old, the oldest Day of the Tree was celebrated in Mondoñedo in Spain in 1594.

2. the oldest tree in the world

Exactly which tree is the oldest tree in the world varies from time to time. However, the spruces in the northern Swedish mountains are definitely among the oldest known trees. Twenty of them are estimated by scientists at Umeå University to be over 8,000 years old.

The North American Scots pine “Sinus aristata var.longaeva” is estimated to be only a comparatively young 4000 to 5000 years old.

3. worldwide names for the day of the tree

“Day of the tree” describes it quite well. Other countries have gotten creative, so you can also celebrate, for example, ‘Tree Loving Week’ in Korea, ‘The Nation Festival of Tree Planting’ in India and ‘The Greening Week’ in Japan.

Activities for the Day of the Tree

The theory is now complete, are you ready to celebrate?

The most common activity on Arbor Day is, of course, planting trees.

But if, for some reason, you can’t plant trees yourself this year, here are a few dozen activities – both indoor and outdoor – to help you celebrate Arbor Day in a different way.

Seven fun ideas for celebrating Arbor Day at home

Whether it’s because of a virus, bad weather or any other reason, if you’re celebrating Arbor Day at home this year, here are the nine coolest Arbor Day activities that don’t require you to wear pants.

1. be surprised by these 15 fantastic forest facts

There are so many things we can learn from forests and trees. These facts about the forest ecosystem are guaranteed to fascinate you.

2. plant a tree for yourself, the planet or your favorite person

Trees stand for everything that is good. Plant a tree from the couch with our help and dedicate it to someone you really, really like.

3. change your laptop/mobile phone background to a great tree picture

Remind yourself of the beauty (and importance!) of trees every day with a great new tree wallpaper for your laptop or phone.

You can either photograph it yourself or take inspiration from Maja’s tree gallery. Maja is a long-time supporter of Click A Tree and loves taking photos of trees.

4. find out about your favorite tree

Do you already know all his superpowers? Trees can do so much more than just look beautiful and provide shade. One of our favorite trees is the baobab, as it is a real all-rounder.

Here are 7 amazing facts about the baobab tree.

5. read Peter Wohlleben’s book “The secret life of trees”

How often have you walked past a tree, perhaps even admired it, without paying attention to what is actually going on inside? You’re missing out!

Trees have so much more to offer than we can see from the outside. Did you know, for example, that trees are social creatures?

In The Secret Life of Trees, forester and author Peter Wohlleben takes you into the world of trees and shows you how similar trees and people are.

6. start a tree painting competition with your loved ones

It’s as simple as it sounds. Who can paint the most beautiful / colorful / funniest tree?

We would love you to share your masterpieces with us on Instagram!

7. Netflix & Chill

Take a virtual walk through your nearest arboretum or watch one of the incredible tree documentaries you can find online.

Here is our recommendation:

Or would you prefer to spend Arbor Day with your nature-loving friends? Then you should share this article with them so you can choose a fun activity together for Arbor Day.

Five outdoor activities on Arbor Day

Want to spend the day outside? Super! Many people plant trees today, but there are of course other activities you can do on Arbor Day.

1. get a tree tattoo

If you really love trees, there’s no better day than today to get a classy tree tattoo. Of course, this is only for the tattoo lovers among us.

For inspiration, we’ve already asked our community around the world to show us their favorite tree tattoos and explain their meaning.

2. plant your own tree

Like so many people on this Arbor Day, you too can plant your own tree.

If you have enough space in your garden, great! Call your local nursery and find out which tree species is best for you.

In case you don’t have enough space in your garden, you could contact your local environmental champions and ask about community events on Arbor Day. Join in – it’s really fun and you get to meet cool new people!

And, if there are no events near you, you can organize your own. With a little help, it’s easier than you think.

3. dance around a tree and sing funny tree songs (preferably with your loved ones)

Find a tree with enough space around it to start a wild tree dance session.

Come up with unique lyrics to celebrate the tree. Let your love for nature out openly and uncensored.

4. hug a tree. Take a photo. Post it on Instagram and tag us.

Instagram needs more tree pictures – definitely!

Tag @clickatree. And add the hashtags #tagdesbaumes and #twentrees.

5. organize a tree treasure hunt (“Tree-sure Hunt”)

How about a bit of geocaching action on Arbor Day? Or a good old-fashioned “Tree-sure Hunt”, without iPads and smartphones.

Anything is possible with a little creativity.

Helping the earth to heal is a task for us all. That’s why Click A Tree has launched the #freetree4you campaign.

By planting these trees, you are not only combating climate change, but also creating jobs, wildlife habitats and much more.

Now to you

What will your day of the tree look like? What are you going to do? Have you ever celebrated Arbor Day? Do you have any great stories, hacks or tips that you would like to share with us?

The day of the tree, a wonderful day for a wonderful plant!

What would a world be without trees?

Introduction and definition: What is a sustainable company?

Let’s start with a brief history lesson and the definition of sustainability.

The origins of the term sustainability date back to the 17th century: Carl von Carlowitz coined the word in connection with forestry.

Von Carlowitz was of the opinion that only as much should be cut down in a forest as can regenerate naturally within a certain period of time. He called this a “smart way of forest management”, a “consistent and sustainable use of the forest”.

It was not until 1992 that a holistic and global approach was developed with the guiding principle of sustainable development.

This calls for economic development to take into account three dimensions of sustainability in order to avoid incalculable environmental hazards and political risks.

The three dimensions of sustainability are: Economic, social and ecological.

What makes a company sustainable?

The aim of a sustainable company is to harmonize economy, ecology and social responsibility. The future viability of a company depends on this.

A few years ago, resource scarcity was mainly perceived at company level as purely an image issue.

It has now become a very real problem for the economy and society – and of course for our planet – as the situation continues to worsen, and we must act now to turn the tide.

Read our article The Twentrees if you want to learn more about the role trees play in saving our planet.

The topic of sustainability is becoming increasingly important for companies. Legislators have also recognized this and have set out a legal framework for emission values.

The 2030 Agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals have placed a responsibility on companies with more than 500 employees. Since 2017, they have had to explicitly list their sustainability efforts in their annual report.

However, it is worthwhile, especially for small and medium-sized companies with fewer employees, to operate in an environmentally conscious and sustainable manner.

This is because the structures here are still such that many measures can be implemented quickly and without great effort.

We want to prove that sustainability is also easy for companies and that you can make a big difference with just a few clever changes.

Why are sustainable companies more successful?

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important for companies, and not just for marketing reasons.
Rather, it is a philosophy that can be applied holistically to the company.

Good reasons for your company to become more sustainable:

Operating sustainably, i.e. using resources sparingly, reduces costs for your company.

Fair working conditions, environmental protection and careful use of resources are demonstrably rewarded by consumers:

The I love Sushi restaurant has significantly increased its turnover thanks to its tree roll, which is sold to plant a tree. The campaign has brought the restaurateurs international press attention.

Sustainable production or sustainable added value justifies higher prices, because consumers are quite prepared to pay more for it. This in turn makes companies interesting for investors.

Sustainability is a verifiable quality criterion and strengthens your positive image.

Sustainable consumption binds customers to your company in the long term. If they feel they are doing something positive through their consumption, they become real brand ambassadors.

Transparency is not a problem for sustainable companies. Due to increasing digitalization and social networks, unfair production conditions and environmental sins can hardly remain unseen and are punished by consumers.

A sustainability strategy makes your company more innovative and attractive to employees. Well-qualified and motivated applicants prefer companies with a positive image and a sustainable corporate philosophy.

Young professionals in particular are attaching ever greater importance to a good work-life balance, sustainable resource management and are specifically looking for an environmentally friendly company.

Your efforts lead to loyal and motivated employees, loyalty to your company is promoted and fluctuation is lower, which minimizes the effort and costs of recruiting.

How the Click A Tree Green Business Guide works

To make it as easy as possible for you to become more sustainable, we have rated all the tips in terms of three categories: the extent of their impact, their cost and their effort.

Yellow: These tips have a medium effect, require average effort or are associated with costs. Once you have ticked off all the green tips, start on the yellow ones.

Red: These tips can only achieve a small effect, require a lot of effort or cause higher costs. This category is suitable for companies that have already found some sustainable solutions for themselves and want to take the extra step.

The foundation

To create a good basis for all medium and long-term sustainability efforts, a little bit of work is needed on your part. But we promise you, it’s worth it!

With the following tips for more sustainable companies, you can steer your business towards the future and make yourself competitive in the long term.

Your vision statement

Effect: High / Effort: High / Costs: None

It all starts with attitude – and deriving the right goals from this.

At the beginning, it is important to define an idea of what your company should stand for. Develop a mission and vision statement.

A vision is good when many people see it as important and significant. A vision gives employees orientation and creates meaning.

Sounds abstract? Wikipedia is an example of a successful vision statement:

“Imagine a world in which every single person is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge” – [“Imagine a world in which every single person has free access to the sum of all human knowledge”].

Click A Tree was also born out of a vision.

Chris founded Click A Tree because he loves elephants. Their habitat is disappearing and they are threatened with extinction:

” My big dream is to create enough habitat for these wonderful animals to survive. One day I want to be able to show my grandchildren real, live elephants!”

Chris Kaiser, CEO & Founder Click A Tree

The first step: Formulate a vision for your company.

Superpower: Employer of the future, Outstanding image

Support your community

Impact: High / Effort: Medium / Costs: Low

If you are thinking about your company’s impact on the environment, for example how you can offset emissions, start by looking around in your immediate vicinity.

What social and ecological problems are there in your region? What contribution can your company make to combating this? What resources are available to give something back?

A continuous, active social contribution will have a lasting positive impact on your company’s image, boost your sales figures and make you a more attractive employer.

Companies that are active at the location both economically and for charitable purposes and act in a socially responsible manner towards their own employees and business partners are rated as more attractive.

A survey of employers in over 30 German cities conducted by Statista confirms this and names the top employers in each region.

The Bertelsmann Stiftung has launched a platform that networks committed companies and local, business-related players and provides information about opportunities for local involvement.

On the one hand, it offers inspiration for your own commitment through examples and materials, and on the other hand, companies can share their efforts as best practices.

The first step: Get involved regionally now

Superpower: Outstanding image

Set yourself concrete goals

Impact: High / Effort: Medium / Costs: Low

Think globally – if you keep this in mind with regard to your company philosophy, it will have a big impact.

If you can formulate your vision for yourself, derive concrete goals from it – for example, to produce CO2-free within the next 10 years.

It is best to think in big steps and include your own motivation. This is the basis of any successful CSR strategy.

The first step: Getting started with CSR and tips from the German government

Superpower: Outstanding image

Nothing works without the team

To make your company more sustainable in the long term, your team is indispensable.

Involve the team

Effect: High / Effort: Medium / Costs: None

Perhaps there is someone in the team who is particularly passionate about sustainability and would be delighted to become a champion of your sustainability efforts.

Appoint a committee of several people to increase engagement. This way, your employees automatically get to grips with the topic and can contribute their own ideas and initiatives.

Provide your employees with your vision and goals so that their efforts match your company goals.

The first step: Put the search for CSR officers on the agenda of the next team meeting or plan a separate meeting for this purpose.
Superpower: Happiest team, productivity pro

Promotes further training

Effect: Medium / Effort: Medium / Costs: None

Introduce one day a year on which your employees can receive further training on the topic of sustainability.

The virtual academy for sustainable education offers a Germany-wide, free course for sustainable development.

The Bremen University of Applied Sciences project has been funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation since 2011. The Virtual Academy provides free further training for anyone interested in sustainability.

Students can choose from 16 different topics such as “Human nutrition and ecological consequences” or “Sustainable management”.

The first step: To the offer of the Virtual Academy for Sustainability

Superpower: Employer of the future, Happiest team

Team building

Effect: Medium / Effort: Medium / Costs: None

Joint activities promote a sense of unity in your team. What could be better suited to this than activities for environmental protection or for a charitable cause?

If your company is located near a park, for example, pick up litter together and turn it into a team-building activity.

The first step: Inform about sustainable team events

Superpower: Happiest team, Outstanding image

Healthy employees

Effect: High / Effort: Medium / Costs: Medium

No successful company without motivated, satisfied and healthy employees.

We all spend a large part of our time at work. This makes it all the more important to design the working environment in such a way that it is conducive to maintaining our health.

Modern technologies present employees with new challenges in ever shorter periods of time, which can lead to stress and mental strain, which unfortunately often results in secondary illnesses.

According to the Federal Ministry of Health, an incredible 50 million people in the EU are affected. The resulting reduced productivity in the workplace leads to high business and economic damage.

The prevention and promotion of mental and physical health plays an important role in sustainable operational management and contributes significantly to the economic success of companies.

BKK Provita is the first and only climate-neutral health insurance company. Tips on the basics of occupational health management, for example on the topics of exercise, nutrition and stress, can be found in the employer portal.

The first step: To the BKK Provita offer

Superpower: Happiest team, productivity pro

Employee gifts

Effect: Medium / Effort: Low / Costs: Low

Think about sustainable solutions for employee gifts too, before you worry about whether to give each employee a branded mug or a USB stick this time.

For events such as company anniversaries, weddings, births, birthdays or simply as a Christmas present, you can also give your employees a really meaningful gift, such as a tree!

Lovingly made upcycled handicrafts are also a great idea. Upcycling is the creative recycling of waste materials into new designs. In contrast to recycling, the source materials are upgraded.

Of course, Upcycling Deluxe also offers office supplies such as laptop sleeves, notepads and other products.

The first step: To the creative and sustainable upcycled gifts

Superpower: Employer of the future, Happiest team

You are how you eat

Of course, a Green Business Guide should also include a chapter on nutrition.
Goethe already knew that physical well-being is crucial for our productivity.

“When you have eaten and drunk, you are born again; be stronger, braver, more skillful at your business.”
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832)

Admittedly, he made no statement about the quality of the food and drink. Today we know that we need to take a more differentiated view.

Our sustainability tips ensure that you can easily and, above all, consciously meet your basic needs in the office.

Our hacks make it easy for you to eat and drink in an environmentally friendly way!

Impact: High / Effort: Low / Costs: Medium

Research shows that a healthy and balanced diet is the key to physical and mental fitness.

We say: Good nutrition makes you sexy and smart.

Our eating habits have a major impact on the environment. Excessive consumption of animal products and meat is no longer in keeping with the times.

Logically, you shouldn’t be completely indifferent to what your employees fill their bellies with. Especially if you have a canteen, a plant-based diet can be encouraged.

Try to offer more vegetarian alternatives than meat-based dishes. A vegetarian menu should consist of wholesome dishes and not side dishes.

Introduce meat-free days. With a little preparation, even vegan recipes are quick and easy to cook.

First step: Easy and delicious vegan recipe ideas

Superpower: Employer of the future, Happiest team

Eat seasonally and locally

Impact: High / Effort: Low / Costs: Medium

A lot of emissions can be saved simply by eating regionally and seasonally.

Pay attention to the menu in the canteen, but also at catering and events, and critically scrutinize the quantity and selection of food.

Sustainable nutrition is regional and seasonal, because regionality saves CO2 emissions through short transportation routes, strengthens suppliers in the region and guarantees the freshness of food. A classic win-win-win situation!

The first step: Get a seasonal calendar to make your menu more sustainable.

Superpower: Employer of the future, Outstanding image

From the tap into the glass

Effect: Medium / Effort: Low / Costs: Low

Make it easy for you and your employees to drink and provide water dispensers or plenty of water in glass carafes with drinking glasses.

And: ban plastic bottles and cups completely from your office.

Our tap water is of fantastic quality. What could be more obvious than drinking it? This saves money and the hassle of lugging around boxes.

If you like it fizzy, you can simply sparkle it yourself and will hardly notice any difference to mineral water.

The first step: Click here for the Sodastream bubblers

Superpower: cost killer, employer of the future

Coffee with milk and sugar? – Fair please.

Impact: High / Effort: Low / Costs: Medium

We would like to pay special attention to coffee drinkers, because there is great potential for sustainability here!

You take responsibility with fair, sustainably produced coffee. You can buy it for example at
Coffeecircle
. The guys and girls offer an all-round carefree package for offices, including a coffee subscription and individual advice.

You can even borrow your coffee machines here!

The first step: Get a quote from Coffeecircle

Superpower: Employer of the future, Happiest team

Don’t be George Clooney

Effect: Medium / Effort: Low / Costs: Low

Even though capsule machines are dirt cheap, they are not exactly an environmentally friendly solution for companies. If you already use such machines, there are now suppliers for
refillable capsules
.

If a (new) purchase is on the cards, pod machines are the better choice, but nothing beats good old filter coffee or the French press. For fully automatic machines, you should always opt for an energy-saving model with an automatic switch-off function.

The first step: The most environmentally friendly coffee machines at a glance

Superpower: Employer of the future, cost killer

Less is more – minimalism in the office

A minimalist lifestyle is no longer limited to personal lifestyle.

And rightly so, because it offers great potential to work in a more structured, efficient and stress-free way, especially in the office.

In the Green Business Guide, we provide simple tips on how to gradually make your office more minimalist and environmentally conscious.

Reduces paper & prints smart

Effect: Medium / Effort: Low / Costs: Low

The aim is to do as much as possible electronically and banish the mountains of paper from your desks. This is also very liberating, looks tidier and helps you find documents.

Collects misprints directly at the printer as scrap paper. Switches completely to recycled paper, especially for internal use, and prints on both sides. If possible, you can also scale several pages onto one sheet.

You can create different print profiles to save you having to search for the right settings several times and set the default settings for your printers.

The first step: Set up default settings for printers

Superpower: Productivity professional

No empty desks

Effect: Medium / Effort: Medium / Costs: None

Workplaces can be shared – with flexible working models with part-time employees and remote work, it is definitely worth checking which workplace capacities are actually needed on site.

If you are not currently expanding and your meeting rooms are mostly empty, you should consider whether you want to downsize.

Otherwise, office sharing is a good way to rent out empty spaces and earn a little extra income to cover rental costs.

The first step is to take stock. Offers surplus workstations as shared offices.

Superpower: cost killer, sales increase

We need to talk about waste

What would a Green Business Guide be without a section on waste?

It accumulates everywhere, everywhere it is too much. We have learned from an early age to separate, avoid and recycle waste properly. This usually works better at home than at work.

The amount of waste we produce in the company is often enormous. Luckily, there is our Green Business Guide with sustainability tips to help you reduce and recycle waste.

No disposable cups

Effect: Medium / Effort: Medium / Costs: Low

Deposit cup systems for the catering trade are already relatively well known, but why not switch to reusable cups for canteens and the like?

Your employees need coffee, of course. But your employees like to drink it from reusable cups just as much. RECUP has the right solution for every business.

The first step: Request your RECUP solution!

Superpower: Outstanding image, employer of the future

Give them the rest!

Impact: High / Effort: Medium / Costs: Low

Whether at catering events, in the staff canteen or during the production of meals – food waste is produced everywhere. Most of the time, the food is still perfect and would make someone else full and happy.

Before the food ends up in the garbage can, you have to bear the costs of disposal, the food is subsequently incinerated and harmful CO2 is released, why not simply have this food saved?

Too Good to Go
is the world’s largest app dedicated to reducing food waste. It connects companies that have surplus food with users who want to consume it.

Just by being listed in the app, more people will become aware of your company and your environmental commitment.

Of course, you can also easily give leftover food to your employees to take home or have it collected via food sharing!

The first step: release surplus food for rescue with Too Good to Go!

Superpower: sales growth, outstanding image

Can it go or is it hazardous waste?

Impact: High / Effort: Low / Costs: Medium

Is waste disposal called that because it causes companies terrible worries?

Manufacturers, retailers and importers – all parties are affected by legal obligations arising from national and international legislation on waste electrical and electronic equipment, batteries and packaging.

The handling of waste is prescribed by law in the following order

Avoidance: If no waste is produced, nothing needs to be disposed of. Companies are obliged to treat the prevention of waste as a priority.

Preparation for reuse: Of course, it is not possible for any company to avoid waste completely. Any waste produced should be reused. Examples include recycled paper, refillable toners and rechargeable batteries.

Recycling: There are two ways to do this: Recycling is the reuse of materials, in which a new product is created from the waste. This type of reuse has priority.

Other recycling: If material recycling is not possible, energy recovery, for example, should be sought. Waste with a high calorific value is used as an alternative to conventional energy sources, which helps to conserve resources.

Disposal: If no other recycling is possible, the simple disposal of waste remains. The waste is then collected and stored in landfills.

The first step: Deutsche Recycling offers help with recycling for companies.

Good climate

The indoor climate is an important environmental factor in the workplace. An indoor climate that is perceived as comfortable has a positive effect on the well-being, health and productivity of your employees.

So there are very good reasons to include tips for a more pleasant working environment in our Green Business Guide.

Just no thick air

Effect: Medium / Effort: Low / Costs: Low

There are probably few things that fulfill the stereotype of a German more than airing the house. (Except maybe punctuality and transition jackets.) But we recommend it anyway.

If there is a lack of fresh air in the room, open the windows fully and turn down the heating. This is much more effective and energy-saving than leaving the window permanently tilted and the heating on.

Temperature perception is subjective. However, the heating or air conditioning should not be turned up and down all the time.

Agree on an appropriate, permanent room temperature during working hours. Logical: Turns down the heating after hours or switches off air conditioning units.

A timer for the heating is super practical and easy to use. This means that heating is only used when it is really necessary. We have found a very inexpensive heating thermostat that can also be controlled via app.

The first step: Click here to order a thermostat from the store of your choice

Urban jungle in the office

Effect: Low / Effort: Low / Costs: Low

Plants are not only beautiful to look at and create a cozy atmosphere in your office. The green friends are real energy bombs and extremely useful for your productivity:

They reduce noise levels, act as natural dust filters and humidifiers, absorb pollutants from the air, have a calming effect, promote concentration and reduce symptoms of fatigue. Wow!

When you read this, you can imagine,
how great trees are for our environment?

We recommend undemanding plants such as dragon trees and arched hemp for the office and for anyone without green fingers.

Plantsome makes it easy for you and offers various packages for the office. For those who like gimmicks: In the Plantsome app, you can enter the names of your plants and be reminded to water them.

Your plants don’t have a name yet? Then it’s high time!

The first step: Find your plant package with Plantsome now

The energy must flow – but smart

Of course, a complete sustainability guide must also address the issue of energy saving. That is why we cannot do without this topic in the Click A Tree Green Business Guide.

In our digitalized world, energy consumption is a huge item on a company’s balance sheet. The
Electricity demand accounts for around 38 percent of total carbon dioxide emissions in Germany.
in Germany.

If you think smart, you can save money and do something for the environment. Even if some sustainability tips may seem trite, they pay off in the end.

When buying new appliances, it is essential to pay attention to the energy efficiency class, as this can save a lot of energy almost automatically.

Switch to green electricity

Effect: Medium / Effort: Low / Costs: Low

The main aim of certified green electricity tariff providers is to promote the use of energy from renewable sources and investment in renewable technology. This will stop the production of environmentally harmful coal and nuclear power in the long term.

On average, green electricity is even cheaper than conventional electricity. Guarantees of origin are used to prove that electricity comes from renewable energies. It does not matter in which country the electricity is generated.

Quality seals such as the Green Electricity Label, Ok-Power and TÜV seals can also provide guidance on how sustainably a provider operates.

Naturstrom AG is the first green electricity provider in Germany to be independent of the coal and nuclear industries. According to the medium-sized company, its entrepreneurial activities focus on sustainability rather than returns.

In addition to supplying green electricity, Naturstrom is even building its own green power plants. The environmental organizations Naturschutzbund Deutschland (NABU) and Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz (BUND) recommend and use Naturstrom.

The first step: Get a free quote from Naturstrom now

Install your own solar system

Effect: High / Effort: High / Costs: High

Photovoltaics is also an issue for companies and tradespeople. Produced electricity can be consumed, stored and/or even fed into the public grid.

Photovoltaic systems are also tax-deductible.

The initial investment costs should of course not be underestimated, but modern solar systems usually pay for themselves within a few years.

The first step: The photovoltaic calculator helps you to decide whether the installation makes sense for your company.

Have power guzzlers recycled

Effect: Medium / Effort: Medium / Costs: Low

Old appliances account for a large proportion of (unnecessary) electricity consumption. Check the consumption of your printers and co. and identify your power guzzlers.

Of course, you shouldn’t scrap all your appliances straight away, but a new purchase usually pays for itself after a short time. The majority of old electronics can be wonderfully recycled.

UN experts have calculated that only around 17.4% of the e-waste generated worldwide was recycled in 2019. In Europe, this figure is 42.5%.

We still think there is room for improvement. Help creates
Europe’s largest non-profit IT company, AfB
.

AfB stands for “Arbeit für Menschen mit Behinderung” (work for people with disabilities) and, as an inclusion company, specializes in remarketing as many appliances as possible by purchasing and refurbishing them.

You achieve a remarketing rate of at least 65%. By 2025, they want to save 200,000 tons of CO2 through IT remarketing and at the same time create 700 jobs, 300 of which are for people with disabilities.

Not only does this give your company a sustainability bonus, you are also automatically making a social commitment by helping to create jobs for people with disabilities.

The first step: find out how you can have old appliances recycled.

Superpower: sales growth, employer of the future, outstanding image

Uses rechargeable batteries

Effect: Medium / Effort: Low / Costs: Low

Although batteries pollute the environment, are hazardous waste and an expensive disposable item, over 10,000 tons of batteries are sold in Germany every year.

Reusable batteries are worthwhile: repeated use protects the environment and you benefit from lower energy costs.

For all battery-operated devices, it is best to use only rechargeable batteries instead of mono cells.

Provide battery charger(s) in the company, but make sure that this device also has an automatic switch-off function.

The first step: You can find an overview here.

Superpower: Cost killer

You can save yourself the trouble: Stand-by mode

Effect: Low / Effort: Low / Costs: Low

Our rule of thumb: unplug any appliance that you do not use (several times) a day after use! Do not leave any plugs in the socket unnecessarily. Especially not overnight or over the weekend.

Ask your employees to switch off their computers and laptops at the end of each working day.

For new purchases, you should definitely check whether the appliance has a proper off switch, as this is unfortunately no longer a matter of course. You should deactivate the screen saver on all devices. These things are 90s style anyway.

The first step: Put up a nice(!) sign reminding your employees to switch off devices and unplug them.

<h2″>Go one better: turn your office into an intelligent office

Make your life easier by equipping your office with smart technology and hardware.

Once set up, our tips in the Green Business Guide will not only save you time, but also money.

Intelligent energy systems

Impact: High / Effort: High / Costs: Medium

The simplest variant is probably timers, (motion) sensors instead of switches. Where there are no light switches, nobody forgets to turn off the light. And of course it is very energy efficient.

This is particularly useful in toilets. And it’s also more hygienic – after all, light switches are the biggest source of germs in the office.

The first step: Here is an overview of sensor-controlled indoor lights.

Superpower: Cost killer

Efficient water systems

Familiar from public toilets – taps can also be controlled with sensors. Installing flow restrictors saves water.

And: every toilet flush should have a
stop function
function. Interesting for men: there are urinals that work without any water or chemicals at all, for example from Urimat.

The first step: Take stock of your sanitary facilities. Which sustainability tips can you implement?

Superpower: Cost killer

Declare war on pendulum madness

Unfortunately, commuting is still a very real problem for many employees. The commute to work is getting longer and longer. At the same time, the number of commuters has risen to a record high of over 19 million in recent years.

There are many good reasons why we should try to reduce commuting. In addition to the benefits for our environment, which are paramount, statistics show that non-commuters have lower divorce rates, less absenteeism and fewer health problems.

In our Green Business Guide, we give you tips that can reduce this problem in your company.

Goodbye presence fetish

Effect: High / Effort: Medium / Costs: Low

So simple, so effective. If your employees can do at least part of their work remotely, the fact that they no longer have to travel to work will save a huge amount of emissions.

Of course, the infrastructure must be provided by you (VPN, laptops for employees instead of PCs, etc.) as well as by the employees (accessibility, workplace equipment).

If you work from home more often, you may even be able to downsize your office and thus reduce operating costs such as rent.

And another advantage: with the option to work from home, employees who “just have a cold” and “can still work” drag themselves to work less and therefore don’t directly infect half the team.

The first step: Follow a few rules for working from home and make it easier for your employees to work from home.

Superpower: Employer of the future, Happiest team, Outstanding image, Cost killer

Environmentally friendly commute

Impact: High / Effort: Medium / Costs: Medium

Of course, the bicycle is probably the most environmentally friendly and healthiest means of transportation that can be used for commuting to work.

This is not always an option for a variety of reasons. Offer incentives for your employees to use public transportation.

A job ticket is a welcome perk for many employees. A change in the law has made it even more attractive from 2020, as the job ticket no longer has to be offset against the flat-rate income-related expense allowance.

Of course, it is also attractive from an employer’s point of view:

Job tickets demonstrably increase the satisfaction and loyalty of your employees to the company. Your CO2 emissions are reduced and a positive contribution is made to climate protection, which also has a positive effect on your image and your personnel policy.

If the car is necessary because, for example, the connection is not ideal. Try to organize car pools. Traveling together also strengthens the team spirit.

The first step: Provide your employees with a job ticket.

Superpower: Outstanding image, Happiest team

Business trips in the 20s

The primary goal is to avoid emissions. As this is not always possible, the Green Business Guide offers you some sustainability tips to reduce your carbon footprint.

Plant trees for bookings

Effect: High / Effort: Low / Costs: Low

If you have not yet introduced a travel policy for your company, formulate standards and rules for business trips. Use tools that reduce or offset your impact on the environment.

One of these is our travel portal B’n’Tree.

If you book business trips via B’n’Tree, you automatically plant a tree with just one additional click per hotel or flight booking – free of charge! Don’t you think? It really is.

The first step: Install the practical B’n’Tree browser extension for Google Chrome. She thinks for you and reminds you to plant a tree for free with every booking.

The second step: Use B’n’Tree for every booking

The third step: Tell colleagues, friends, family, neighbors and anyone who travels regularly.

Superpower: Outstanding image, employer of the future

Sustainable means of transportation

Impact: High / Effort: Medium / Costs: Medium

If possible, avoid flying and prefer train travel (BahnCard100), use local public transport instead of cabs.

There is now also a well-developed infrastructure for the last mile with numerous bike-sharing and e-scooter providers.

If you can’t do without flying, choose the right airline. Some are involved in climate protection projects or optimize their climate efficiency.

The first step: create or renew a travel policy for your company.

Superpower: employer of the future, cost killer

Work equipment

The furnishing of your office and the equipment of your employees also offer you great potential to take responsibility as an employer.

Our sustainability tips will help you to make your company greener when it comes to equipment.

Fair workwear

Effect: High / Effort: Low / Costs: High

If your employees wear uniforms or uniforms, have them made sustainably. Stylish and sustainable workwear of outstanding quality, especially uniforms, can be found, for example, at
KAYA&KATO
.

For other fashion you can find an
overview
of all Green Button certified, sustainably produced clothing. The Green Button was introduced in 2019 as the first state textile label by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The first step: Order (the next) workwear fairly! To KAYA&KATO.

Superpower: Employer of the future, Happiest team

Sustainable furniture

Effect: High / Effort: Low / Costs: High

Manufacturers of sustainable furniture usually use solid wood and largely avoid glued-together plywood, toxic varnishes and plastics. The wood comes from sustainable forestry.

The organic furniture, which is mostly handcrafted in Germany, is durable and therefore better for our health and the environment than from the Swedish giant.

However, wooden furniture is often heavy and difficult to transport, which is not really necessary at home. However, the needs of companies are different – whether for the home office, office, events or trade fairs.

For people who prefer to leave the trees in the forest, there are sustainable alternatives.

Lightweight, flexible furniture systems such as those from MOVISI that can be quickly assembled, rearranged and moved – creative furniture that you can design yourself for living rooms, home offices, offices, trade fairs or events.

The first step: To the modular collections from MOVISI

Shipping and trade

Local procurement and partners

Effect: High / Effort: High / Costs: High

We could now recite a long list of the advantages of local sourcing.

Because we don’t like busywork, we prefer to keep it short and limit our explanations to the most obvious points.

Of course, you reduce your CO2 emissions if individual parts of your production are not flown or shipped around the world several times. A short and direct transport route makes you more flexible and more likely to deliver on time.

Personal contact with suppliers also creates transparency and trust. All parties respect the environmental and occupational health and safety regulations that apply here, which is ultimately also very valuable for your brand image.

Of course, in the end, the lower transportation and packaging costs have to be weighed against higher prices for locally manufactured primary products. This is particularly advantageous for companies that procure in smaller margins.

Hand on heart, how and where do your suppliers and partners produce and do business? When was the last time you researched local alternatives?

Climate-neutral shipping

Effect: Medium / Effort: Low / Costs: Low

Ask your logistics partner about their shipping options. The market leader DHL automatically delivers all parcels and packages throughout Germany in a climate-neutral way.
For shipments abroad
DHL Go Green
is an additional option that can be booked to send climate-neutral shipments for cents.

So make sure that your intercontinental shipping is also climate-neutral.

The first step: Check out the options of Germany’s Big 5 shipping service providers here.

Reusable packaging

Impact: High / Effort: Medium / Costs: Medium

If you run an online store, you should definitely check your packaging for possible optimization potential. Start small and replace plastic filling material with cardboard.

Reusable packaging is a good way to reduce the growing packaging waste caused by online retail.

RePack is a global reusable system for shipping packaging with a worldwide returns system. The packaging is made from recycled materials.

The first step: Switch your online shop to recycled packaging. Are you unsure? Here you will find convincing arguments for this.

Trees as an extra benefit

Effect: High / Effort: Low / Costs: Low

Have you ever thought about the possibility of linking your goods to a good deed?

Trees are a wonderful way to do this: they create habitats for endangered species, combat climate change and create jobs for local communities.

Three is three good deeds at once!

Of course you don’t have to plant them yourself, we or our experienced local partners will do that for you.

And there are almost endless other ways to integrate tree planting into your sales strategy and thus into your customers’ everyday lives.

But the best thing for you is that you can increase your sales.

The first step: Find out more on our B2B page or write to us directly!

Compostable packaging

Effect: Medium / Effort: Medium / Costs: Medium

For advanced users: Do you want to go one better when it comes to packaging, but reuse isn’t enough for you? Great!

What is the increase in reuse? Recycle. How great that there is also compostable packaging!

Landpack
is a specialist in environmentally friendly insulated packaging, specializing in chilled goods. They replace polystyrene packaging, such as that used for shipping food or life science products, with high-performance alternatives made from renewable raw materials.

The first step: Contact Landpack for your individual recycling shipment

Clever & contemporary offline marketing

You can’t (yet) do without offline marketing. This is mainly because most people see it as more reputable and trustworthy than online advertising.

According to studies, printed content is remembered longer than if it was displayed via a banner, for example. Probably because people can remember something better if they have held it in their hands.

Our (digital) Green Business Guide offers you practical tips on how you can make your offline marketing more sustainable.
Download the Green Business Guide Spreadsheet so that you can access the tips at any time, even offline, and don’t forget them straight away…. ;

Flyers and brochures

Effect: Medium / Effort: Low / Costs: Medium

In general, you should of course reduce the amount of printed advertising material as far as possible. If you still regularly print flyers and the like, use recycled paper.

TheUmweltDruckerei certainly has the right solution for you for climate-neutral print products. Sustainability is viewed holistically here.

Recycled paper is standard without exception, vegan organic inks based on vegetable oil are used for printing, the electricity comes from renewable energies and production and shipping are climate-neutral. Any questions?

The first step: Towards climate-neutral printing

Reduced, sustainable give-aways

Effect: Medium / Effort: Medium / Costs: Low

When it comes to giveaways, less is more: Fortunately, the days of lugging home bags of (pointless) promotional gifts from events are over.

Ecologically responsible giveaways should be both practical and made from recyclable materials such as bamboo, wood, cork or felt.

In addition to the smaller specialized stores, the large promotional product suppliers now also have a section with ecological alternatives.

The first step: Show me the sustainable giveaways

Superpower: Cost killer, Outstanding image

Questioning events

Effect: High / Effort: Low / Costs: Low

Which events and trade fairs are important, and how many employees really need to attend them? Do you still need the large exhibition stand with additional support staff and the entire team on site?

It is worth taking stock after each event and questioning the necessity of the “regular events”.

Many smaller meetings can now take place digitally. Try Zoom meetings.

The first step: Request a demo directly

Digital Footprint

Every search query, every streamed video, every type of cloud computing is responsible for an ever-increasing global demand for electricity – and thus for rising CO2 emissions.

In the Click A Tree Green Business Guide, we provide sustainability tips that can reduce the scale of this increasingly important problem and/or provide carbon offsets for your business.

Use a sustainable search engine

Effect: Medium / Effort: Low / Costs: Low

The WWF Panda Search is a search engine like Google. The difference is that it invests the advertising revenue in WWF projects.

For you, this means nothing more than setting up WWF Panda Search as the default in your browser and using it to search the web as usual.

Search results are now generated by Panda Search and the ads that interest you now benefit our entire planet instead of a single company.

The first step: Set up Panda Search as the default search engine.

The article also contains further tips on how your browser can plant trees for you – why not share it with your team right away?

Superpower: Employer of the future

Reduces e-mail traffic

Effect: Medium / Effort: Low / Costs: Medium

Every 1 MB e-mail sent consumes around 20 grams of CO2. If you send ten emails a day for a year, that’s the equivalent of driving 500 km by car.

Studies also show how inefficient e-mail communication has become and how it disturbs the recipient’s concentration. Visual or acoustic signals are added when new messages are received.

The simplest solution to save CO2 and work more effectively at the same time is obvious: write fewer emails!

But how can this be implemented in the company?

Google Workspace offers a simple solution, for example, with the option of working on a document in parallel with colleagues or external partners.

Changes can be tracked in real time and discussed via the integrated chat or comment function – all without additional e-mail traffic.

The first step: Take a look at the Google Workspace solution

Pro tip: Any e-mail longer than five lines should be clarified over the phone. The same applies to appointments, as this avoids unnecessary writing back and forth. The Calendly app can help you find appointments.

Superpower: Productivity Pro, Happiest Team, Employer of the Future

Goes for a green e-mail provider

Effect: Medium / Effort: Medium / Costs: Low

A secure, sustainable e-mail provider for business customers is mailbox.org. The energy-saving servers in the Berlin mailing service provider’s data centers naturally run on green electricity.

Important for your business: Encryption is a top priority at mailbox.org, both when accessing the mailbox and when exchanging emails with other email services.

There are special tariffs for companies that offer more storage space, separate mail accounts and shared document storage, among other things.

The first step: Request advice or move to mailbox.org

Are you ready for a truly meaningful New Year’s resolution? 2021 is over and wow, what a year it was! It’s time to look ahead and think about 2022 and the new resolutions.

Are you ready for a truly meaningful New Year’s resolution?

2021 is over and wow, what a year it was! It’s time to look ahead and think about 2022 and the new resolutions.

But especially after a year like 2021, it shouldn’t be just any resolution. But a really sensible resolution. Challenge yourself and make our planet a better place at the same time.

It’s much easier than you think. Here you’ll find 12 ideas for New Year’s resolutions that really make a difference, as well as action plans at various levels of difficulty to help you achieve and keep your resolution in 2022.

The top three reasons why most people don’t keep their New Year’s resolutions and how you can avoid these mistakes can of course also be found here.

Why should my New Year’s resolution make an impact?

Of course you can decide on a personal New Year’s resolution. Many people do this, but doing more sport or saving more money doesn’t help anyone but yourself.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with making a personal New Year’s resolution. But how cool is it when you make a strong resolution that not only benefits you, but also the planet and its inhabitants?

Just to emphasize that: Each of the effective New Year’s resolutions listed below will also benefit you. But beyond that, it benefits the planet, biodiversity and other people.

Sustainability at its best is holistically sustainable, which means that everyone benefits from it. This is exactly what you can achieve if you decide on a meaningful and effective New Year’s resolution.

Three main reasons why most people don’t keep their New Year’s resolutions

According to Statista¹, 2/3 of people don’t manage to keep their New Year’s resolutions. 36% of respondents break their resolutions within a few hours to a month.

Here are the three main reasons why most people don’t keep their resolutions and how you can avoid these mistakes.

#1: The New Year’s resolution is too ambitious

The biggest challenge with New Year’s resolutions is that most people set themselves far too ambitious goals.

If you want to save more money, it is doomed to failure if you say to yourself: “I will save 30% more of my income next year” because that goal is far too ambitious.

It would be much smarter to approach your goal in small steps, such as “Every month I will save 2.5% more than the previous month”. So you will save 2.5% more in January, 5% more in February and so on and so forth until you have saved 30% more at the end of the year.

The same applies to more sport, a healthier diet or smoking less. If you set out to go from 0 to 100, there is a very good chance that you will not reach your goal. If you accept that there is no elevator to success and you are allowed to take the stairs, you are much more likely to keep your New Year’s resolutions and achieve them.

#2: The New Year’s resolution is too vague

The second big challenge with New Year’s resolutions is that they are often imprecise.

Honestly, how exactly do you measure that you are “eating healthier” or “exercising more”?

Make a SMART resolution for the next year. SMART stands for:

S = Specific

M = Measurable

A = Attractive

R = Realistic

T = Terminated

Set yourself a measurable number for your resolution, add a deadline. And off we go!

#3: New Year’s resolutions are quickly forgotten after New Year’s Eve

The third big challenge is that most people forget their New Year’s resolution just a few days (or even hours) after they’ve made it.

Preventing this is really easy: If you really want to change something in your life and add value next year, then write your green resolution on a piece of paper and place it somewhere where you and everyone who visits you can see it.

This way, not only will you remember every time you see your resolution, but your friends and family will also remind you when they visit you.

This means you have someone who can ask you about your progress and also motivate you if things aren’t going so well after all.

How can I ensure that I keep my resolution for 2022?

Keeping your sustainable New Year’s resolution for 2022 is much easier than you think.

Simply avoid the three traps mentioned above.

So:

The more precisely your resolution is formulated, the better.

Use a calendar where you can cross out the days on which you have kept your resolution. This gives you an extra boost of motivation when you have reached a series of days.

If you have decided on a meaningful resolution, you have the added motivation of making a difference. As you are not only doing something for yourself thanks to your resolution, but also something for others, it will be easier for you to stick to it.

Make sure that you only make one resolution for the new year. Although we have listed 12 sensible resolutions here, choose just one for you.

If you have already made your resolution a habit within the first three months, you can of course come back here at any time and choose another resolution.

Tip: Bookmark this article so that you can easily find it later. Alternatively, you can also send us an e-mail and we will be happy to remind you of your resolution on a monthly or quarterly basis.

A special tip to help you successfully implement your meaningful New Year’s resolution

A clever way to remind yourself of your New Year’s resolution is to wear a bracelet. Whenever you look at the bracelet, you will be reminded of your wonderful resolution for the year and your chances of achieving it will be increased.

Alternatively, you can set a regular reminder on your cell phone.

The best idea for keeping your New Year’s resolution is to convince a friend to join you. This way, you can motivate each other when you are lacking motivation.

So ask a friend to join you today. Share this article on Instagram and Facebook, and make a resolution that you want to achieve together.

What’s so special about this “green guide” for New Year’s resolutions

To help you achieve your New Year’s resolution and ensure it not only helps you but also contributes to a greater whole, we’ve created our guide to green New Year’s resolutions with a few extra tips.

All the resolutions mentioned are sustainable resolutions with a great effect

Firstly, you will find that all the resolutions mentioned are sustainable. They are good for you and good for our planet.

Different levels of difficulty

Secondly, we have divided each solution into three difficulty levels. No matter where you are on the path, there is an option that is challenging on the one hand and achievable and realistic on the other. As learned above, this is the key to actually achieving your New Year’s resolution.

If you are unsure, then start small. If you easily mastered the easier challenge in January and February, you can move up to a higher difficulty level in March.

The costs: save money with these resolutions

Thirdly, we have only chosen resolutions that won’t break your bank account. Since one of the most important New Year’s resolutions worldwide is to “budget better”, we have even chosen resolutions that will save you money instead of spending it.

If they cost money, like the New Year’s resolution to plant more trees next year, we’ve linked to valuable resources, such as how to plant trees for free.

Can I only make a new resolution on New Year’s Day?

No, of course not. Every day of the year, you can choose to make the planet a better place. If you remove New Year from the word New Year’s resolution, all that’s left is resolution.

There is absolutely no law about when to start a new resolution and make a positive change in your life.

Even if you’re reading this on a day other than New Year’s Day, feel free to pick your favorite resolution and make it a habit starting today.

12 really effective New Year’s resolutions for the new year

Okay, enough now. Here are 12 super sustainable and really effective New Year’s resolutions for 2022.

You can also try out and implement a new one every month.

No matter which one you choose, you will be actively involved in making our planet a better place.

Sustainable New Year’s resolution #1: Plant trees on autopilot every month

With the practical tree subscription, we plant a tree for you every month where it is needed most.

The great thing is, you don’t have to worry about anything else, we do everything for you. Every month you do not just one good deed, but several. Because planting trees combats climate change, creates habitats for endangered species and jobs for local communities. Isn’t that fantastic?

What are you waiting for? You can start right now with the tree subscription and make our world a better place month after month.

Effective New Year’s resolution #2: Eat less meat

Livestock farming is one of the biggest sources of CO2 emissions worldwide. Eating less meat helps to reduce these emissions and saves animal lives at the same time. It’s a super valuable and effective New Year’s resolution.

And contrary to a widespread misconception, it is much easier than expected.

How to put your green resolution to eat less meat into practice

As mentioned before, if you want to go straight from 100% carnivore to 100% vegan, you are doomed to fail. The smarter way to achieve sustainable success is to proceed in small steps.

Choose one of these three options that sounds realistic to you. There is no right or wrong here, every step helps.

a) Make Monday meat-free. Don’t eat meat on Mondays.

b) No meat before 6 pm. Don’t eat meat before 6 pm.

c) Eat a vegetarian diet. It’s easier than you think, because there are so many healthy and delicious vegetarian dishes. (If that’s not challenging enough: try Veganuary – eat vegan for the whole of January. (Of course, another month is also possible))

Body and eco-friendly New Year’s resolutions #3: Go plogging

Plogging is a Swedish portmanteau of the word “plocka up”, which means “to pick up” and “to jog”. “Jogging”, you know… running around aimlessly to have an excuse to spend the rest of the day on the couch watching Netflix without feeling bad about it. (Yes, that is the official definition of “jogging”).

Plogging has already become a trend in Europe. North Americans are also slowly joining this trend and picking up litter lying around during their workouts.

Most ploggers carry a small plastic bag with them.

Advanced ploggers fill a reusable cotton bag, empty it in a garbage can, wash the bag and start again.

In addition to the ecological aspect, the added value is that jogging becomes a full-body exercise. All that bending down and picking up objects exercises the whole body.

Believe it or not, you can also pick up litter without jogging. While you’re strolling through the park, walking your dog or chatting with a friend.

We have tried it out and so far no one has complained.

How to put your eco-friendly decision to go jogging into practice

Whether you go jogging, on your walk or pick up litter on the way to work is entirely up to you. The only thing you should commit to is regularity.

Here are three suggestions:

a) Collect five pieces of garbage once a week.

b) Pick up litter two days a week.

c) Pick up ten pieces of garbage three days a week.

Feel free to vary these suggestions to suit your schedule and ambitions.

As already mentioned, you should make sure that your goals are achievable: Our planet will benefit much more if you pick up one piece of trash every week for the next year than if you pick up five pieces of trash every day but decide on January 3 that you’ve had enough.

Green New Year’s resolutions for the new year #4: Fly less

Unfortunately, flying is not yet completely climate-friendly. Decide to fly less than… well… before the pandemic. (If you commit to flying less than in 2021, that would be a bit too easy, don’t you think?)

The added benefit of flying less is that you will enjoy flying more and look forward to it more.

How to put your eco-friendly resolution to fly less into practice

Flying less is not that difficult. We all learned that the hard way in 2020 and 2021.

If you fly a lot for work, explain to your superiors that many meetings can also be held online. This not only saves the company money, but also a lot of time and is good for the environment.

If you are addicted to flying on vacation, you should explore the surrounding area a little more closely. There are lots of great places that you can reach by train or bus – or even by bike.

Here, too, we should start with the next realistic step.

a) Take one less flight next year than in 2021

b) Halve the number of flights from 2021

c) Treat yourself to a single return flight next year.

Wherever you are traveling and whether you are traveling for business or pleasure: Our Green Travel Guide will help you to travel more sustainably and save a lot of money at the same time.

Effective New Year’s resolutions #5: Say goodbye to fast fashion

Fast fashion is a term that shouldn’t really exist. But unfortunately it does exist, because fashion has become so incredibly cheap.

As a smart citizen, you know that cheap fashion comes at a high price, both for the environment and for the working conditions of the people who produce it.

Saying goodbye to fast fashion is a very effective resolution for the coming year. You save the environment, improve working conditions for people all over the world – and save yourself the hassle of having to buy new things every other week.

A win-win-win solution, don’t you think?

How to put your smart resolution to say goodbye to fast fashion into action

Saying goodbye to fast fashion is much easier than you think. Because you can still buy things – just make sure they’re second-hand.

You could also set up a quarterly clothes swap with your friends. It’s even easier if you go through your closet and discover your hidden treasures.

To turn a fast-fashion addict into a slow-fashion superstar, consider the following steps as your New Year’s resolution:

a) Don’t buy anything new once a week

b) Don’t buy anything new for two weeks in a month

c) Don’t buy anything new (except maybe underwear)

If, in the case of a) or b) buy new items, make sure that they have been produced ethically and in an environmentally friendly way. Also, think about whether you really want something for at least a week. If you still want it after that one week, there’s a good chance you’ll wear it long enough to make it slow fashion.

Sustainable New Year’s resolutions #6: Plant more trees

Trees are true heroes when it comes to making our planet a better place.

They combat climate change by absorbing CO2, they serve as a habitat for animals to preserve biodiversity, and planting trees creates full-time jobs and income for people all over the world – especially in less privileged areas of our planet.

And these are just three of the 16 UN Sustainable Development Goals thatare supported by planting trees!

That’s why planting more trees is the most sustainable and effective New Year’s resolution you can make. (You can say we’re biased because we plant trees. But look at it this way: we started planting trees because it’s the most effective thing you can do.

Decide to plant more trees next year – you know that our planet needs all the help it can get.

How to put your green resolution to plant more trees into practice

Planting more trees is not that difficult. You can either do it yourself or let other people do it for you.

In its simplest version, implementing this resolution is as easy as visiting clickatree.com once a month and planting a tree. How easy is that?

Depending on your ambition, there are 3 options:

a) Plant one tree a month

b) Plant one tree per week

c) Plant a tree every day in the new year

Since we promised you that none of our meaningful New Year’s resolutions would break your bank account, here are 11 super simple ways to plant trees for free. 11 super easy ways how to plant trees for free simple ways how to plant trees for free.

With one tree per month, there is only one tree left for which you pay. To get that done, plant your first tree right now.

Sustainable New Year’s resolutions #7: Stick to your shopping list

Similar to fashion, there are many other things that we buy often and rarely need. This includes everything from electronics to household goods, from snacks to software.

To counteract this, you should resolve to only buy things that have been on your shopping list for a while. This gives you time to think about whether this purchase is really necessary or not.

Great side effect: if you only buy things that have been on your shopping list for a long time, you save a lot of money.

How to put your smart resolution to stick to your shopping list into action

The very first thing you need for this smart resolution is, of course, a shopping list. If you don’t have one yet, download a suitable app like Listonic.

And then: use it. Create separate lists, e.g. for food, electronics, household goods, etc. Whenever you think you need something, write it on the list. If you change your mind the next time you look at the list, cross it out.

If it is still there after the time frame you have set, you are welcome to buy it. The best thing to do is to look on second-hand sites like eBay or Craigslist – you’ll usually find something there.

Possible time frames are:

a) one day

b) one week

c) one month

You’ll quickly realize that most of the purchases we make are impulse buys – and we definitely don’t need these things if we think about it for a while.

Green New Year’s resolutions #8: Climate-neutral commuting

2021 has shown us that working from home is an acceptable solution in many cases. However, it doesn’t work in all situations – and we don’t know whether your employer will allow you to work from home in the future or not.

So let’s think about environmentally friendly routes to work. If the way you are currently commuting is good for the climate, you are doing it right.

If not, make this green New Year’s resolution for 2022 to get on the right track.

How you can put your sustainable resolution to commute in a more environmentally friendly way into practice.

You already know that it is much more environmentally friendly to take public transportation, carpool or bike to work than for every employee to use their own car.

Let’s now put this knowledge into practice. Commit to a greener commute:

a) one day per week

b) three days per week

c) every day

And hey, once again: this New Year’s resolution not only has a positive impact on the climate, but also saves money. What’s not to like?

Sensible New Year’s resolutions #9: Take reusable materials with you

Make a statement next year by carrying reusable items with you: A reusable coffee mug, a cotton shopping bag, a stainless steel water bottle, your own Tupperware lunch box, a reusable face mask… whatever it is, all of these reusable items will prevent a lot of trash from becoming trash in the first place.

And the effect doesn’t stop there: If you choose a cool, reusable item, other people will want it too – and with little effort, you’ve saved a lot of waste from landfill. Cheers to you!

How to put your green resolution to transport reusable materials into practice

Of course, you need reusable materials first and foremost. But maybe you already have a cotton bag? Do you know a friend from whom you could borrow a reusable lunch box in the long term?

In case you decide to buy a new one: Do you have a reusable lunch box? Make sure it looks cool and stylish and print your personal message or a family picture on it. The more you love it, the more you like to carry it around with you – and the more you like to talk about it with other people.

It all adds up. So if you buy something new, make sure it’s worth buying.

Once you have prepared everything, use your reusable materials

a) once a week

b) three days per week

c) every day

If you want to go one step further: share a picture of your reusable products on Instagram. Tag us and let us know we’ve inspired you – and we’ll be happy to share your story if you like.

Effective New Year’s resolutions #10: Send emails

Yes, it’s true: even sending emails can have a big impact – and is therefore the perfect green resolution for anyone who spends a lot of time in front of a screen. Does that sound like you?

The only thing you need to keep in mind is that it’s not just any kind of email.

Send emails to your favorite companies and thank them for the great work they do. And also send e-mails to companies that are not yet doing so well and make suggestions to them on how they can improve.

As a potential customer, you have it in your hands. If you suggest to a company that you would prefer to avoid plastic, reduce emissions or plant trees for every purchase you make, they will soon do so. This is how our capitalist system works.

How to put your sensible resolution to send valuable emails into practice

Of course, the most effective emails are those that contain actionable suggestions. It’s great to praise companies for what they do right – but it’s best to give them a tip or two on what they can do even better.

Do you need inspiration? Simply suggest one of these effective New Year’s resolutions to the company of your choice. If you are able to do this as a private individual, the company that wants your money should also be able to do so.

As far as frequency is concerned, how about a commitment to

a) one e-mail per week

b) three e-mails per week

c) five e-mails per week

If you think about it, searching for an e-mail address takes about a minute.

If you send similar emails to each company using a template (copy and paste), it will take another minute to personalize each email.

Even if it takes you four minutes to write this email, it’s only 5 minutes in total from start to finish. That’s less than half an hour a week to achieve the gold standard in this sensible New Year’s resolution.

Do you think you can take 30 minutes a week to make our planet a better place?

Sensible New Year’s resolutions #11: Reduce single-use plastic

Single-use plastic is a nightmare for our planet: The raw materials used and the emissions generated during production, as well as the longevity are disproportionate to the useful life. (Which in the case of plastic bags or straws is only a few minutes).

Commit to using less single-use plastic in 2022. This not only saves our planet, but also saves a lot of money.

Apart from the fact that you no longer have to buy plastic bags in the supermarket, you will also benefit from this effective New Year’s resolution by buying fewer unhealthy foods such as potato chips or chocolate bars. These are all packaged in disposable plastic. They’re bad for the planet – and not exactly healthy for you either.

Reducing single-use plastic is a win-win solution!

How you can put your green resolution to use less single-use plastic into practice.

No matter where you are on your journey to living waste-free, there is always a next step you can take.

How about one of these three ways to reduce your single-use plastic waste?

a) Start with single-use plastic-free Fridays. Don’t buy single-use plastic on Fridays. (Ideally, you shouldn’t buy potato chips on Thursday and then eat them on Friday).

b) Reduce your single-use plastic waste by 5% every month. It sounds ridiculously simple at first – and it is. But it gets harder every month, and you’ll get better and better at using less single-use plastic over time.

c) Reduce single-use plastic waste by 10% every month. For example, if the plastic garbage can is currently full after 10 days, commit to filling it to 11 days next month. It’s as simple as that.

The supreme discipline would of course be to strive for zero waste. But since no one is born a master, you should start with a single next step.

Altruistic New Year’s resolutions for the new year #12: Spend time for a good cause

There are so many good causes. We waste so many hours watching Netflix, taking another nap or playing computer games.

We’re not saying that you should cut out all leisure activities. But how about dedicating a small part of your valuable time to a good cause?

How to put the effective resolution to invest time in a good cause into practice

Step 1: Find a good cause to dedicate your time to. You could join a local organization, help your neighbors, support Click A Tree on social media, or do something else you feel is “worthy”.

Step 2: Do it.

Not only do you do good, but you also learn new things and meet a lot of cool people.

How about

a) 30 minutes per week

b) one hour per week

c) 30 minutes per day

Remember: every little helps. There is no such thing as too little – or too much.

In future, a tree will be planted for every portion of a monthly changing dish sold.

Eating out and doing good. Sustainability has never been so delicious.

Here we explain exactly how this works, why it is extremely valuable and how you can be part of it.

About St. Ottilien: Tradition meets foresight

The St. Ottilien forest restaurant has been in existence for over 500 years. And perhaps it is precisely this centuries-old tradition that has shaped our understanding of sustainability.

After all, the team has by no means had enough and plans to remain a popular excursion destination for Freiburg residents in the middle of a green oasis for the next 500 years.

And to ensure that the area around the traditional forest restaurant remains so wonderfully green, the St. Ottilien team will also be involved in Food for Future in the future, planting trees diligently.

Why a forest restaurant plants trees

Now St. Ottilien is already in the middle of the forest. So why exactly should you plant trees there?

The answer is simple. On the one hand, the team at St. Ottilien knows the value of an intact forest.

And secondly, they do not plant the trees on their own doorstep, but in tropical Ghana.

On the one hand, this restores habitats for endangered animal species and, on the other, creates valuable full-time jobs for people in a less privileged region of the world.

And we all know that trees absorb CO2 and thus slow down climate change anyway.

Where exactly on this planet these trees are located is not so important, as climate change is a global issue.

The advantage of planting trees in tropical countries in this context is that the trees can grow much faster here, as they do not have a winter break.

As a result, more CO2 is absorbed more quickly – extremely valuable when you consider that , according to the unanimous opinion of 11,000 scientists, we have just this one more decade to stave off irreversible damage from global warming.

And that’s right, this decade has already begun. We are already in the all-important twentrees.

How you can be part of Food for Future thanks to St. Ottilien

If you would like to join in and plant trees while eating out: Nothing could be easier:

  1. Just visit the St. Ottilien forest restaurant(map).
  2. Order your Food for Future.
  3. And you’ve already planted a tree.

This is not only extremely easy, but also extremely tasty!

If you want to go one step further, post a photo of yourself with your food on social media, linking to both St. Ottilien and Click A Tree.

Oh, and: If you have already eaten today, or are not currently in the Freiburg area, then simply share this article with friends and acquaintances who live in and around Freiburg.

Via Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Twitter or e-mail. Or via all five channels – that would be even cooler, of course.

In this way, you can contribute to a better world with just a few mouse clicks.

Feedback on St. Ottilien and Food for Future

In fact, people’s feedback on St. Ottilien’s participation in Food for Future has been consistently positive so far. This is also reflected in the steadily rising sales figures for the monthly changing dish.

And this is shown by the resulting press attention, such as the above-mentioned mention by baden.fm or the article in the Freiburg city magazine Chilli.

But more importantly, what do you think about the campaign? Do you like the idea?

How everyone benefits from a partnership with Click A Tree

The 4-win formula

Share with your community on LinkedIn now:

Our mission is to bring forest creation into everyday life. In order to succeed with this mission, we have created a system in which not only the planet wins, but EVERYONE involved.

Our mission is to bring forest creation into everyday life. In order to succeed with this mission, we have created a system in which not only the planet wins, but EVERYONE involved.

Because if we want to save the planet, we have to do it in a way that benefits everyone: you, your customers, us and, of course, the planet.

Curious about how sustainability can be profitable? And can anyone REALLY benefit from a partnership with Click A Tree? What is the real deal?

Let’s reveal our secret, not-so-secret 4-win formula.

1. our partners gain new customers and media attention

Sustainable commitment is an important purchasing factor nowadays. Planting trees for every product sold wins new customers, strengthens customer relationships and increases sales for our partners.

But this concept not only attracts the attention of individual customers, the media love it too! Our partners are experiencing one great headline after another. But don’t just take my word for it, see for yourself in this 2-minute case study about a sushi restaurant in Stuttgart.

The restaurant increased its sales by 22% (while Germany was in lockdown) and attracted the attention of well-known German magazines such as Prinz and Geheimtipp Stuttgart.

Planting trees for every product or service sold offers a new perspective on saving the planet. You bring the creation of forests into everyday life and earn money at the same time.

Let’s talk about what makes it special and why your customers will love shopping with you!

2. win your customers by buying something they love and doing good

Let’s face it, we’re all pretty busy and although we want to save the planet, the responsibilities of our lives often get in the way. If you can offer your clients a way to do something good without adding to their to-do list, they will LOVE you for it.

When you partner with Click A Tree, your customers can buy something they love while planting trees with Click A Tree and supporting 16 of the UN’s 17 SDGs.

So your customers can do all these good deeds simply by buying from you! How good is that?

Sounds like a win-win situation!

Would you like to get started? Great, then send us an e-mail.

3. we succeed in our mission

Our mission is to bring the creation of forests into everyday life. And we can only do that if we work with great companies (like yours) that want to do something good for the planet.

With the current rate of deforestation, there is plenty of room to plant more trees. So if we can make planting trees as easy as possible, combine it with your products or services, we will be successful with our mission.

But let’s not forget the people who look after our trees. At Click A Tree we have created a system where everyone wins. And this also includes our colleagues at the tree planting sites.

As a for-profit company, we only work with full-time employees from local communities and therefore alleviate poverty in countries where there is less happiness.

And since we are doing this for the planet, here is the last part of our 4-win formula: Our Planet.

4. our planet

Here’s the brutal and sad truth: climate change is real and deforestation is happening on a tear-inducing level.

Trees play an important role in combating climate change as they absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen back into the air. Put simply, we need trees to live.

But we are not the only ones who need trees to survive. With the current rate of deforestation, animals are also losing their homes, and for some species this is even leading to extinction. When you plant trees, you also create habitats for animals.

Want to find out more about how trees can save our planet? This article about the Twentrees will explain everything.

Have you liked what you’ve read so far? Then read on, because you’re about to find out how easy it is for you to work with us and benefit from the 4-win formula.

This is how easy a partnership with Click A Tree works

In the simplest case, you select a product and calculate the costs for a tree in your sales prices. Alternatives are one tree per 2/5/8 … products or similar.

At the end of each quarter, you tell us how many trees you want us to plant, pay the costs and we start planting.

In return, we will send you customized marketing material such as photos, videos, GPS coordinates and success stories of the planting teams, which you can use to inform your customers about your green commitment. As well as certificates for the number of trees you have planted together with your customers.

Join in!

Our 4-win formula has already enabled us to plant over 100,000 trees. And we are a long way from stopping! Our goal is to plant billions of trees and with your help we can make this happen!

If you have a company that offers a product or service, send us this email and start the conversation.

It couldn’t be simpler. Let’s work together and achieve the win-win-win-wins of the 4-win formula together!

Capitalism linked to sustainability

Caritalism

Share with your community on LinkedIn now:

Imagine you could save our planet by simply drinking a cup of coffee. Or eats sushi. Or give someone a birthday present.

What if we tell you that this is possible?

It’s called caritalism – the art of combining charitable work with a capitalist system. Or to put it very simply: you are saving our planet and doing nothing different to what you already do every day.

Too good to be true? No, it’s not. In fact, caritalism is already anchored in some areas of our lives.

In this article, we show you how we can make caritalism a global reality together. (It’s much easier than you think). But now let’s get to the basics.

What is caritalism?

Caritalism is a so-called portmanteau word and is a combination of the words ‘charitable work’ and ‘capitalism’.

In its simplest form, caritalism combines the best features of our capitalist system with the sustainable ethos of charitable work to give our planet a future.

Caritalism makes a capitalist lifestyle much more sustainable without changing much. There are no billion-euro promises, no petitions and no demands to change your lifestyle. Instead, let’s save our planet together by simply carrying on as usual. Because right now, our planet needs our help more than ever before.

Here is an example of caritalism. You buy sushi for lunch, just like you do every day. The only difference is that the company where you buy the sushi (such as I love Sushi) now has a cool agreement with us: We plant a tree when a selected sushi roll is ordered. The more sushi rolls are sold, the more trees are planted. This is capitalism combined with charitable work.

Whether you buy a coffee, use public transport or book a short vacation, you are making the planet a better place at the same time. This happens automatically when you buy from companies that use part of their income for good causes.

Why should caritalism become our new norm?

Why all this fuss? Why do we need caritalism?

For one thing, it seems that the majority of people do not want to return to pre-pandemic conditions. In Germany

almost 47% intend to change their lifestyle and live more sustainably

. On the other hand, scientists have

scientists have published a report

stating that we only have 10 years to protect the earth from irreparable damage. Also in
The Twentrees
we have already told you that this decade is our last chance to save our planet.

We already know that we can’t carry on as before. Something has to change. And there is no better time for change than now.

We need a solution that improves the capitalist system and is in line with long-term, sustainable, non-profit work. We need companies that make money while practicing sustainability. Both elements must work together.

This solution is caritalism. If we implement this solution, everyone will benefit.

What will caritalism change?

Funding for charitable work: Currently, charitable work is not consistently supported. Short-term, one-off donations pose a challenge. It is not possible to implement long-term strategies and plan for the future in this way.

Karitalism changes this: instead of financing a project for one year, Karitalism finances a project for 10 years. Or even longer. Just imagine how much more effective community service will be with the guarantee of long-term support.

The capitalist system: Sustainability becomes more attractive for companies as they attract the attention of new customer groups who are keen to make sustainable purchases. In this way, they continue to increase their profits.

And when companies regularly support charitable work, the charitable work also becomes financially profitable for companies.

Planting trees with Click A Tree

Sustainable work will no longer be dependent on volunteers, donations, or minimum wage for the people who dedicate their lives to these wonderful causes.

However, it is crucial that they continuously finance the protection of our planet.

Let us know in the comments if you agree that caritalism should become our new norm?

The biggest challenges for caritalism

At first glance, caritalism looks easy to implement. However, there are a few hurdles that we have to overcome first.

When you
plant a tree with Click A Tree
this is a wonderful start to overcoming these hurdles.

Challenges with regard to capitalism

Sustainability is not profitable

Typically, capitalist companies strive for maximum profit. Sustainable commitments sometimes fall to the bottom of the priority list because they are not considered profitable. That’s why we need to change this perception

At Click A Tree, we understand the challenge of reconciling profits with sustainability. No company in the world is successful with high operating costs and non-existent profits.caritalism combines long-term, sustainable commitments with profit. There are no losers. Your company will make a profit by simply supporting charitable work. You can find proof of this in the
case study from I Love Sushi
.

And when each of us recognizes this sustainable practice as a way to increase profits and protect our environment, everyone wins. You and me too.

Profits are above the planet

We already know that capitalism encourages companies to buy from the cheapest suppliers and sell at the highest possible profit. And currently, the cheapest suppliers of goods rarely use sustainable practices.

We have seen countless examples of jungles that have been cut down to exploit the nutritious soil. Monocultures are created instead of natural, diverse crops – because they are cheaper and more efficient in the short term.

With Karitalism, we make it easier for companies to support biodiversity and its long-term effects. We are making the cheapest suppliers of goods more sustainable by building healthy and diverse ecosystems that will thrive long after our time.

The biggest challenges in terms of charitable work

Lack of reliable financing

The biggest challenge for non-profit work is the lack of reliable funding. Instead of planning projects with a consistent and measured approach, non-profit organizations have to work with sporadic, one-off donations.

This prevents long-term development. It is impossible to plan the entire life cycle of a project. In the same way, the budget of a sustainable project can be cut if the donations do not appear as expected.

With regular support, non-profit organizations have more room for overhead costs, employee salaries and business development. You can create a foundation and plan for the long term.

Volunteer labor

As there is rarely a budget left over for a local workforce, volunteers often make up the numbers. Volunteer efforts like planting trees, digging wells and educating children in developing countries are great! They are extremely valuable and selfless acts. But unfortunately they don’t last long.

Volunteers come, volunteers go. They leave behind a new school in a developing village (which again is amazing!), but they don’t leave behind a long-term plan or an experienced workforce.

Caritalism makes it possible to employ locals and reward them with a fair salary. There is long-term development, local experience and expertise, and investment in the community.

Unhelpful stereotypes

Finally, we are also stuck in a very unhelpful stigma where society believes that the only way to work sustainably is to do it voluntarily. If we want to make a difference, the general belief is that it should be voluntary or at least funded by donations, like a gap year. Sometimes people are even happy to pay for entertaining volunteer work!

This common view is deeply flawed and only encourages the current short-termism of charitable work. With consistent support and long-term planning, charitable work becomes profitable and requires a permanent workforce. Whereupon we can reward sustainable work with a respectable salary.

And if we do that, everyone in the capitalist system will be inspired to save the planet. Workers will be able to build a career and do something meaningful, and we’ll get rid of this unhelpful stereotype.

How do we make caritalism a reality?

Fortunately, we don’t have to destroy the system and start again to make caritalism our reality. We just need to “update” it a little. Like a smartphone update. Like an update that saves our planet and offers other super benefits.

At Click A Tree, we help non-profit organizations around the world. We understand the big picture with donations and low costs – just like companies. That’s why we have designed caritalism to be business-friendly, sustainable and realistic.

Caritalism for companies

When you plant trees with us, you are joining a collaboration of ambitious, growth-oriented and economically minded companies. It is important that we all attach importance to sustainability.

And this is increasingly being taken into account by consumers before they make a purchase.

A
study by the Capgemini Institute
found that 48% of German consumers would switch to lesser-known brands if they were more sustainable.

With our help, you will become a more sustainable company. The connection between your environmentally conscious customers is strengthened and the interest of many more buyers with social values is aroused. They don’t go to competitors because they know that you care about the planet.

All you have to do is include the costs of your sustainable commitment in your business expenses.

It is also crucial that you contribute to building a long-term partnership that will bring long-term benefits to the communities at our tree planting sites. Just like the long-term partnerships, your profits and ecological status will also grow.

Flexible solutions for companies

You can also plant trees as you wish. We can plant trees for every product you sell, or for every new customer, for every goal you achieve, or for every success story you generate.

If you are an entrepreneur, increase your sales and profits with caritalism. There are no risks and the possibilities are endless. We are excellent at finding a solution that meets your needs and goals.

This is because trees are only planted based on your business success. Take a look at I Love Sushi –
they plant a tree for every tree roll sold
. This means that if no tree rolls are sold, you do not bear the cost of planting new trees, and thanks to the planting of trees, I Love Sushi’s sales of tree rolls increased by 22% in the first quarter of 2020.
tree rolls increased by 22% in the first quarter of 2020
– despite the corona challenges!

The same applies to
our agreement with Koncept Hotels
. We plant a tree for every direct booking you receive: If there is no direct booking, there is no obligation to plant a tree.

Koncept Hotel’s direct bookings have increased steadily since the agreement was signed (until the Corona pandemic, as all types of travel were stopped).

If you want to become more financially profitable and make a difference in the world at the same time, then we want to talk to you!
Get in touch with our friendly team now
– we’d love to help you get involved in caritalism.

Caritalism for consumers

Even if you are not a business owner – you still play a major role. The most important thing you can do now is to decide where to spend your money wisely. Choose companies that plant trees, clean the oceans and protect our planet.

You can easily get started by checking the list of companies who plant trees with B’n’Tree. If you buy something with them, we’ll plant a tree for you. And there are many other ways to buy from ethical companies.
Take a look at 11 easy ways
how you can plant trees for free. Simply by sending e-mails or surfing the Internet.

However, if some of your favorite brands aren’t doing anything sustainable yet, get in touch with them! Actively encourage them to invest in caritalism. Talk to them. Send them a tweet. Give us a call.

You are a valued customer and companies want to keep you happy – you have the power to make a difference.

Caritalism at Click A Tree

Would you like to help end poverty and hunger in the world, combat climate change and give millions of cute baby animals a safe home? Did you know that you can contribute to 16 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals – here and now?

Would you like to help end poverty and hunger in the world, combat climate change and give millions of cute baby animals a safe home? Did you know that you can contribute to 16 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals – here and now?

That’s right, you can. And yes, you actually deserve a superhero cape for that. But let’s explain that first…

What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)¹ are 17 goals developed by the United Nations (UN ). They are a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for every living being on earth.

All 17 goals are interconnected and should not leave anyone out. Each of the goals addresses the global challenges we all face. These include poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice.

They are an important part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development². And since this 15-year plan is already five years old, our current decade is of crucial importance.

Click A Tree supports these sustainable development goals

So now you know what the Sustainable Development Goals are. What role does Click A Tree play in this?

To be very direct, planting trees helps with 16 of the following 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This illustrates why planting trees saves the planet in so many different ways.

No poverty

Global poverty is a complicated and far-reaching problem. Planting trees won’t solve it overnight – but it will certainly help.

Many of our plantations are located in countries with low incomes and high unemployment.

We do not recruit volunteers for tree planting. Instead, we employ locals and pay them a fair and constant wage.

This means that people who previously had to fight poverty can now buy the essentials for their household and even afford school for their children.

No hunger

Everyone knows that certain trees bear fruit that feed both humans and animals.

While we focus primarily on creating thriving ecosystems as habitats for animals, projects like our syntropic agriculture approach in Ghana simultaneously produce crops for the local population to eat and sell.

In addition, all our employees receive a wage that enables them to buy the food they need.

Forests also help to restore the water cycle and improve the quality of the soil.

The entire area around our reforestation projects, including the nearby farms, benefits from more nutrient-rich soils, restored rain cycles and therefore higher quality crops.

Health and well-being

Good food and clean water are important for good health.

But what about clean, high-quality air? What about exercise, money for healthcare and a healthy community?

What about positive thinking and mental health? A long walk in a quiet forest is very calming, and many of us automatically relax in lush green surroundings.

Not forgetting a stable income, without worrying about what to eat next week. Because that is definitely reassuring too.

All this makes tree planting possible, as Boto and Mary experienced first-hand in the miracle of Mahabana.

High-quality education

We have already mentioned that local people who plant trees with Click A Tree receive a salary that enables them and their children to get an education.

Can we go one step further? How about building and supporting a local entrepreneurship school? Can planting trees really support education?

Yes, and it already does! You can find out all about it in our introduction to the Click A Tree Ghana project.

Gender equality

All over the world, women are recruited to plant trees with Click A Tree.

In many countries where we plant trees, women are traditionally expected to do the housework, cook and stay at home. Planting trees helps to break down this old role model.

By working on our plantations, the workers can build a career and become an important part of their community.

As Sushila and Kanji experienced in our success story in Nepal, a career in one of our nurseries can change lives.

Clean water and sanitary facilities

We pay a lot of attention to trees – this is because they are an important part of our fascinating ecosystem.

One of the most important elements of this ecosystem is the water cycle. And trees help to restore it. After rain, they retain the earth’s water reservoir like a natural sponge. This allows sufficient water to stand in wells.

Trees purify the water and supply the soil with essential vitamins. They support vital water catchment areas and help to maintain water levels in a natural way.

Not bad, right? These are just some of the reasons why trees are great.

Instead of building new water treatment plants, which are ineffective and overloaded, trees can purify the water naturally. We just need to plant more of them in watersheds.

A study by the Thomas Reuters Foundation makes it clear that planting trees can significantly improve sanitary conditions in poorer countries³.

Affordable and clean energy

For this goal of sustainable development, we could list everything about wood combustion and the advantages of biomass energy here.

It may be clean, renewable energy, but that’s not really what our Click A Tree trees are about. We create sustainable, functioning ecosystems that are not destined to be burned down.

The procurement of affordable and clean energy is therefore the only goal of sustainable development to which we are not currently contributing.

Decent work and economic growth

Planting trees is certainly no walk in the park – but the work is more than reasonable.

This starts with a fair, steady salary. However, our employees can also take on responsibility and have the opportunity to advance in their careers.

But more importantly, decent work benefits the whole community. Our employees earn money and naturally spend it within the community. In this way, they support other local companies.

When more people find stable employment and unemployment falls, the overall economy in the region begins to grow and flourish.

Industry, innovation and infrastructure

Many of our projects start small. But as soon as the support grows and you help us to plant even more trees, a miracle happens in the industry.

Trees are already helping to purify the water and improve sanitary conditions. Planting even more trees will also fund much-needed new roads and strengthen the community’s resources. Thanks to the entrepreneurship school that we support in Ghana, trees also promote innovation and technology.

Fewer inequalities

Gender equality is extremely important – but it is only one of many inequalities that trees can reduce.

If you help to plant more trees, more people will be employed to plant these trees. Danit gives more people around the world an income and the opportunity to send their children to school.

Income and education enable families and communities to work towards a better life and reduce inequalities around the globe.

Sustainable cities and communities

Seriously, is there anything more sustainable than planting trees?

Little machinery or fuel is needed to plant trees. And there is no waste. Air quality is improved and the entire ecosystem benefits.

In addition, planting trees also spreads the self-sufficiency model. Our employees learn new skills and pass them on to their children in a natural way.

While the next generation learns how to earn a living by planting trees, they also learn about soil, water cycles, nutrition and sustainability. The entire community becomes sustainable in a healthy, long-term way.

Sustainable consumption and production

Planting trees is just one step on the way to a more responsible and sustainable life.

But as soon as you start planting trees, you will also realize how everything comes together to form a big whole.

Trees are a powerful tool in the fight against climate change. They allow us to think outside the box and encourage us to consume more responsibly.

People who plant trees become more environmentally conscious consumers. You buy sustainable products from companies that plant trees(like these partners who support our travel tool B’n’Tree). These companies understand the wishes of their customers and attach great importance to responsible production.

This is the perfect opposite of a vicious circle. And trees are the catalyst.

Climate protection measures

Our Mother Earth has spent hundreds of millions of years perfecting the ideal weapon for us in the fight against climate change.

You guessed it: They are trees!

Trees are natural carbon sinks. They store the carbon that is rapidly heating up the planet and are also home to millions of endangered animals. They also improve the quality of water, air and soil while slowing down the effects of climate change.

It seems as if our world is on fire right now. Climate change is wreaking havoc in every corner of the world. The water temperatures continue to rise. Trees help to combat all this⁴.

So why don’t we listen to Mother Earth and plant more trees?

Life under water

Yes, trees also help living creatures under water.

Mangrove trees are extremely important in many tropical parts of the world, including Madagascar and Indonesia. With their net-like roots, some of which are under water, these trees provide a refuge for marine life.

Parrotfish, groupers and shrimps are just some of the many animals that depend on mangrove trees. This is because the water near the roots is cooler and enriched with oxygen.

Their roots are also an ideal breeding station, as they protect young fish and harbor bacteria on which they feed.

Scientists have discovered that the decline in adult fish in the sea is directly linked to the decline in the mangrove tree population⁵. We simply need more trees to support life under water.

You see, we said that trees can help our world in so many different ways.

Life on land

Trees support life on land in a very similar way. And not just us humans – they support every single breathing organism on the planet.

Trees provide us with the air we need to breathe. They provide us with shelter and many other valuable resources, and are even more important for wildlife, as they not only serve as a natural habitat. Their fruits and seeds are a vital source of food for many animals, on which their lives depend.

No matter where you come from, what you earn or what your background is, each and every one of us depends on trees. Without trees, there would be no life on land. It’s as simple as that, which is why we need your help so that we can continue to plant more trees and combat destructive deforestation.

Even the largest land-dwelling animals are lost without trees. You can protect their future by planting more trees and creating more much-needed habitat.

Peace, justice and strong institutions

Career, security and sufficient resources – these are the things that change many people’s lives for the better. Human trafficking, murder and sexual violence are still widespread in many parts of the world. Our plantations bring hope for change to previously hopeless areas.

Planting trees allows our employees to focus on their careers and avoid bad influences and dangers. With a reliable salary, they can continue their education and lead a better life.

Partnerships to achieve the goals

Planting trees is truly a global cooperation – because it is a very global affair.

At Click A Tree, we work with people in Thailand, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Nepal, Indonesia, Peru and several other countries to plant and care for your trees.

Our Click A Tree team is also international – we currently have support from Europe, Asia, Australia and North America.

We have also entered into partnerships with a number of well-known names in the travel and tourism industry. You can also work with us. We make your company more sustainable and profitable. If you are interested in planting trees with us, get in touch with us to find out what opportunities are available.

What do the Sustainable Development Goals mean to you?

We are grateful for you and everyone who has read this article up to this point. You have already done a lot for us and our planet.

Can we ask for more?

We’ve really made it clear how valuable trees are for the Sustainable Development Goals, haven’t we? We do this for a good reason!

Trees save our planet – in so many different ways. Help us plant trees and remember us whenever sustainability is mentioned by letting Google Chrome plant trees for you and, of course, by planting trees yourself.

Your company can also benefit from this! Planting trees with Click A Tree will attract new customers and strengthen both customer and employee loyalty.

Everyone now researches the sustainability of a company before making a purchase – and that’s no coincidence: if you plant trees for your customers, you’re marketing your product to a much wider, environmentally conscious audience. You achieve a greater reach – and help save the world at the same time!

In addition, you can engage in dialog with your customers about sustainable development as you help to make the world a better place for us all.

Let’s keep planting trees!

It’s as simple as that. When you plant trees with us, you contribute to 16 out of 17 Sustainable Development Goals!

11,000 scientists have proclaimed that without immediate action to stop climate change, we will experience “unprecedented human suffering”.

11,000 scientists have proclaimed that without immediate action to stop climate change, we will experience “unprecedented human suffering”.

What went wrong on Earth? How does the future of our planet depend on our trade? What happens if we do nothing about it? And what can we actually do?

Read on to find out more about the “Twentrees”, the decade that will save our planet.

What are the “twentrees”?

“Twentrees”, what is that supposed to be? A neologism to express the importance of trees for the here and now. “Twentrees” is made up of the English word “twenty”, for the current decade, and the word “tree”. Unfortunately, this makes little sense in German and sounds strange. Or what do you think of “Zwaum” or “the Baumzigers”?

And why all this? Well, when 11,000 scientists agree on something, it’s hard to disagree. That would be like denying the earth’s gravitational pull or that the earth is round. Of course you can, but you shouldn’t underestimate the likelihood of being wrong.

Recently, 11,000 scientists examined data from the last 40 years and “clearly announced that the earth is heading for a climate catastrophe.” We should therefore not underestimate the probability that they are right.

The online newspaper The Indepedent calls “2020 the world’s last chance to get a grip on climate change“.

We must act. We need to make the 20s the “Twentrees” – the decade that saves our planet.

The “Twentrees” can save our planet – if we act now

We are lucky enough to share the planet with millions of other incredibly fascinating animal species.

Your world is just as much in danger.

We have known for years that an increasing number of animals are on the brink of extinction. That our beloved elephants may not live to see the year 2030. Even the largest animal living on land is dependent on trees.

But did you know that even the lives of fish and crustaceans depend on trees? Without mangroves, some sea creatures will very quickly become extinct.

When trees disappear, so do the animals: they need trees as a habitat and source of food.

Many of us are slowly realizing how serious the situation is becoming for ourselves. “2020 is the last chance to tackle climate change and protect our natural world,” writes The Independent.

So the future of our planet is in our hands. But all is not lost. There is hope.

While the prospect of having to save our planet may be overwhelming, on a global scale it can be an amazing opportunity to be part of something epic.

We can make a difference in the next 10 crucial years. We can pave the way to save humanity from extinction.

We can save our planet.

WWF Germany makes this clear in this video.

What we know about climate change

The extent of climate change is complicated, as it is accelerated by several factors.

A steadily growing population, the burning of fossil fuels, CO² emissions, livestock farming, short-lived pollutants, plastic waste… all these things play an important role in damaging our planet and contribute to climate change.

The power to make significant changes lies mainly in the hands of our national governments. They have introduced new laws and thus gradually brought some movement into the game.

The Sustainable Development Goals formulated by the United Nations are an innovative set of goals to protect the planet and improve the lives of all of its inhabitants. Planting trees helps with almost all goals.

But that is not enough.

While we can try to eat less meat, we cannot single-handedly change agricultural policy. We can use less plastic, but we can’t make the industry follow suit. This task lies with international governments.

Sure, they have agreed targets for 2050 and promise to combat climate change before then.

But we can’t wait any longer. We have to take action ourselves. Immediately.

We can lend our voice to movements against climate change and make efforts ourselves to reduce the impact on our climate.

In addition to petitions to get our politicians to act green and moral and monetary support for sustainable companies, it is time to look at what each individual can do in the fight against climate change.

The Twentrees: The decade that will save our planet. Dead tree in a desert landscape

The role of trees in climate change

There are many problems that contribute to climate change, but there are also many solutions.

Something that can reverse the damage that has already been done is much more crucial than all the many possible solutions.

And this something is a tree.

When a tree grows, it absorbs CO² from the air through photosynthesis and stores it as carbon in its wood. In this process, it releases oxygen into the air. We have already shared these and 9 other great properties of trees with you.

Why is this important?

Because carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas which, as its name suggests, is known to accumulate heat. It prevents heat from escaping from the atmosphere and causes our planet to become warmer.

Trees are an important filter for our earth. They are crucial for keeping CO² emissions in balance. That’s why we need more trees and we need them fast.

Frustratingly, we lose large quantities of trees every day. Deforestation for agriculture, urban expansion or for profit destroys 60 hectares per minute.

This is devastating for us humans, but it is far worse for all life on land and under water. Without trees, there would be no wonderful animals with whom we share our planet.

A doomsday scenario? Definitely. Unavoidable? Fortunately not!

What we do in the next 10 years is absolutely crucial for our planet. Let’s ring in the new decade with “the Twentrees”, the decade that will save our planet.

What will it take to save our planet?

How many trees could we plant in the “Twentrees”?

A recent report by ETH Zurich states the number of trees we would be able to plant and the effect they would have on our planet.

It states that, excluding areas already used for agriculture and human habitat, 0.9 billion hectares are suitable for afforestation.

This is roughly equivalent to the entire area of the United States of America!

If the “twentrees” manage this, the mature trees could absorb 205 billion tons of CO² from the atmosphere. That is just over two-thirds of the total emissions ever produced by humans since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution.

Problem solved, right?

Well, strictly speaking, it would take decades for all the newly planted trees to reach that stage. That is why it is so important that these measures are implemented as quickly as possible.

And this is where you come in. Planting trees with Click A Tree helps to create all the trees that are urgently needed. Even if you only plant a single tree. Leave uns start today!

How many working days are created?

The countries that offer the most land for reforestation in the “Twentrees” are Russia (151 million hectares), the USA (103 million hectares), Canada (78.4 million hectares), Australia (58 million hectares), Brazil (49.7 million hectares) and China (40.2 million hectares).

If you live in one of these countries, you have a great opportunity to get involved in local replanting projects.

In general, it is said that 1,000 to 3,000 trees can be planted per hectare, depending on the tree species.

And in one working day, one person can plant around 100 trees. Assuming a year has 250 working days, one person could plant 250,000 trees in the “Twentrees” in 2,500 working days.

Let’s continue this calculation. The “twentrees” last 10 years and if we plant 1,000 trees per hectare on 0.9 billion hectares (the available area), then we come to a total of 900 billion trees that we could plant.

This means that trees create 3.6 million jobs and an incredible 9 billion working days.

Planting trees in the “Twentrees” would change the lives of 3.6 people and their families. They would have a stable and secure income that would provide them with food, financial security and even education.

Related: Caritalism: capitalism linked to sustainability.

How can you help plant all those trees?

Planting trees is something we should all be passionate about, all over the world. We can’t just leave this to those who are actively engaged in it during their work.

The “twentrees” are also our responsibility.

While the world powers debate which countries are suitable for reforestation, how many and which species should be planted in the interests of biodiversity, the rest of us can act.

Plant a tree in your garden, get involved in local projects to plant parks and nature reserves, and support organizations that promote reforestation projects.

Organizations that run reforestation projects? Exactly, that’s us!

At Click A Tree, our mission is to make sustainability simple. And it really couldn’t be easier than with a few simple clicks directly from the screen.

Plant a tree for marine animals, for elephants threatened with extinction or for young adults in Ghana who can use it to create a better future for themselves.

Together we can do it and green our planet again.

The “twentrees” have arrived: It’s time for us to act

Trees will make the difference for our planet. But it’s not just about the big goal. Trees process carbon dioxide at the highest level during growth phases. Theoretically, a 50-year-old tree can have just as much of an impact on climate change as a 150-year-old tree.

A tree that you plant today immediately starts filtering CO² from the atmosphere. It improves the air in your garden, your neighborhood and around the world.

Our only future is a green future. And if enough of us take action, the next decade could be the decade that saves our planet.

We can be the generation that changes the world for the better.

We will sit in nursing homes and say to our grandchildren: “The twenties, they were a tough decade. But we made it.”

Time for you to act

What will you do to make the “Twentrees” the decade that saves our planet?

And most importantly, plant a tree today.

If you know of any businesses that could benefit from planting trees for their customers, make sure they get in touch with Click A Tree.

Talk about us. Save the planet.

And don’t forget to sign up for our monthly newsletter GROW. As a thank you, we will plant a free tree for you as a new member of our community.
