The Click A Tree Guide to sustainability reporting – are you affected by CSRD reporting requirements?

What does the CSRD reporting obligation mean for your company?

In Germany, around 49,000 companies have been affected by the CSRD reporting obligation since January 1, 2024. This is a great challenge, but also a great opportunity!

Nachhaltigkeit führt zu wirtschaftlichem Erfolg

Sustainability and economic success are inextricably linked

There are new requirements for the documentation and reporting of sustainability measures in companies in the European Union and in Germany.

The Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility Directive (CSRD) places a number of demands on the business world.

It is worth developing a sustainable corporate strategy in order to be successful in the long term.

At a time when resources are scarce and climate change is bringing a certain instability to existing production chains, sustainability is not a maybe, but a must-have for economic success.

Companies are securing their future viability here and now by adapting to the new circumstances. The reporting obligation may initially be perceived as an additional burden, but it offers opportunities for long-term success and solid competitiveness. The prerequisites for this are that new market strategies are developed and implemented now.

The importance of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive in Germany and for your business

Many more companies are now affected by the reporting obligation. This means that these companies will take care to cooperate with companies that operate sustainably, both in the supply chain and in their operational business. Even the hotel where business travelers stay has an impact on the values in the sustainability reports.

In 2023, around 11,600 German companies were required to report; in 2024, the figure is now around 49,000. Positioning ourselves sustainably therefore also means becoming, being or remaining a potential cooperation partner for companies subject to reporting requirements. This means that even higher-priced products and services will gain market relevance if their cheaper alternatives are not sustainable.

Who is subject to CSRD reporting?

The Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs explains in detail on its website to whom the reporting requirements have applied since January 1, 2024:

“Corporations and commercial partnerships with exclusively limited liability shareholders that are large companies in terms of accounting law, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in terms of accounting law that are capital market-oriented, and third-country companies with a turnover of EUR 150 million in the EU whose subsidiaries meet the above major criteria or whose branches achieve a turnover of more than EUR 40 million.” (Source: www.csr-in-deutschland.de, 10.02.2024)

Public interest entities with more than 500 employees will continue to be required to report from January 1, 2024.

From the following year (01.01.2025), all other large companies under accounting law are obliged to prepare a CSRD report. And from January 1, 2026, capital market-oriented SMEs will also have to comply with the CSRD reporting obligation, albeit with the possibility of a deferral until 2028.

What does the CSRD reporting obligation mean for economic success?

  • Reducing energy consumption saves money
  • Promoting diversity and inclusion in the workplace creates diversity and diverse teams are more innovative and resilient in crises
  • The use of sustainable materials such as reusable cups or cloth napkins amortize their higher acquisition costs over time and are of higher quality

  • Ordering from sustainable suppliers is initially more expensive, but also safer. Because if there is a supply crisis, fruit and vegetables from the farm next door are still available

  • Implementing recycling programs turns waste into added value

  • The promotion of renewable energies and environmentally friendly technologies is also more expensive to purchase, but safe and inexpensive in the long term

  • Tree planting with Click A Tree serves as a sustainable supplement to the measures mentioned above. Maintaining a livable global climate is the basis for all market economies

Future viability is a criterion for assessing the value of a company

The CSRD reporting obligation makes it easier to assess the sustainability of a company. Sustainability also means resilience. Investors and stakeholders have a great interest in ensuring that their investments are and remain secure.

Those who rely on consistently low-cost production chains abroad are also dependent on them. The last crises have clearly shown this.

Right now, it is not just a duty, but also an opportunity to rethink many things.

Implementing sustainability easily in your company

The K-Apart Hotel plants trees with Click A Tree and focuses on visible sustainability overall. As a large proportion of business guests from large companies book rooms here, which are subject to CSRD reporting requirements, the corporate concept is also geared towards their needs:

  • It has been awarded GreenSign Level 4
  • It has local suppliers & well thought-out supply chains
  • It invests in the environment, regionally & globally
  • It relies on renewable energies
  • It supports recycling chains
  • It supports local communities
  • It uses products that support sustainable and social projects
  • It actively implements gender equality & inclusion
  • It works in a way that conserves resources & avoids toxins
  • It uses reusable products instead of disposable variants

This example shows that basically every company has the potential to operate sustainably and to remain, be or become successful and generate strong sales.

Earth Day – Earth Day

When, where and how to celebrate it

Would you like to know what Earth Day is and how you can celebrate it? Fantastic! Here in our ultimate guide, we’ve put together everything you need to know about Earth Day.

What is Earth Day?

Also known as “Earth Day”, Earth Day is an occasion to celebrate our planet.

It is a small reminder that we all live on the same planet. And that we need to pay attention to him – more on this below.

In short:

When we celebrate the earth, we also celebrate life. And we all love life in some way, don’t we?

Now you know what Earth Day is. Do you already know when it is?

When is Earth Day?

Earth Day is celebrated in Germany and 174 other countries every year on April 22.

Each year, the celebration has a specific theme. The aim of the campaign is to create a greater awareness of nature and promote appreciation for the environment.

The smartest scientists on our planet say that now is our last chance to save our planet. It’s definitely time to act!

Earth Day – a brief history

Did you know that the first Earth Day in 1970 was celebrated by over 20 million people?

The first mention of dedicating one day a year to our planet was at a UNESCO conference in San Francisco in 1969.

A month later, the idea was adopted by US Senator Gaylord Nelson and activist Denis Hayes, and became known as “Earth Day”. Denis Hayes turned out to be a marketing and PR genius, and developed the idea into something much bigger than anyone could have imagined.

Activist Denis Hayes

Earth Day 1970 became the biggest one-day protest in the history of mankind!

But that was not all: in 1990 Hayes made the day international and organized events in 141 countries around the world!

In 2020, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day was celebrated by over 100 million people.

Earth Day is the most widely celebrated secular holiday in the world today.

Earth Day in Germany

Of course we also celebrate Earth Day here in Germany!

Every year, Earth Day in Germany has a special leitmotif for a wide range of activities relating to environmental and climate protection. It’s meant to be an inspiration for people to try out sustainable hacks and make lasting changes in their lives.

The motto for Earth Day 2024 is:

“Planet vs Plastic”

Earth Day offers us a great opportunity to question how we currently live and how we can reduce our impact on the environment.

Earth Day fun facts

Now you know the story of Earth Day, here are some fun facts to impress your friends with:

1. the naming of the Earth Day

Originally, the plan was to call the Earth Day “Environmental Teach-In”. Understandably, this didn’t stick, and so Hayes needed a cooler name.

Along came Julien Koenig. Ever heard of him? No? No worries.

He is the brains behind Volkswagen’s Think Small campaign (a campaign for the Volkswagen Beetle) – one of the most successful advertising campaigns of all time.

And there he was, having coffee with Denis Hayes, brainstorming to come up with cool brand names for a day of environmental awareness.

The story is that Koenig had four ideas: “Ecology Day”, “Environment Day”, “Earth Day” and “E Day”.

“Earth Day” was his personal recommendation because it rhymes with “birthday” and April 22 was Koenig’s birthday.

It’s funny how one of the most popular events in the world came about!

2. the date for Earth Day

John McConnell, who had the original idea for Earth Day, suggested March 21. March 21 is the day of the equinox, the astronomical beginning of spring in the northern hemisphere.

But Gaylord Nelson and Denis Hayes opted for the April 22. And they were much, much better at marketing and PR. That is the only reason why Earth Day on April 22, and not on March 21.

Did Julien Koenig also have a hand in this? After all, April 22 was also his birthday. A great way to leave a legacy.

Ultimately, it’s all about marketing. Even when it comes to saving our planet.

3. day of the earth vs. day of the tree

As the name suggests, we celebrate trees on Arbor Day. In Germany, it falls on April 25.

Although the first Arbor Day was celebrated worldwide in 1594 – and is therefore hundreds of years older than Earth Day – Earth Day became much better known.

It all comes down to marketing…

If you want to learn more about Arbor Day, check out the full Arbor Day guide.

4 outdoor activities for Earth Day

The weather is nice and you feel like going out?

Fantastic. Now, of course, you can go ahead and plant your own trees.

But if that’s not your thing, here are some more great activities you can do outside on Earth Day this year.

1. get a tree or earth tattoo

Show your love for Mother Earth with a fantastic tattoo of the Earth!

Since we’re mainly focusing on trees here, we’ve put together a collection of the finest tree tattoos (including their meanings) for you.

But if you’re looking for something a little more global, your favorite tattoo artist is sure to have great ideas too.

2. do an Earth Day dance (preferably with friends)

Really? You’ve never heard of the official Earth Day dance?

To be honest: neither do we.

So now is the time to invent one! Think of an acrobatic / mind-blowing / fun dance that honors our planet. Maybe it will even be the next TikTok sensation.

Then dance it all Earth Night long…

Don’t forget to record a video. Then post it and tag us on Instagram. We’ll be on the lookout for #earthdaydance and #clickatree.

Some things are much more fun when you do them together. Share these Earth Day activities with your friends and spend a fantastic day together.

3. plant your own tree

As mentioned above, planting a tree is always a great option – especially on Earth Day.

Check that your garden has enough space and call your local nursery and ask which tree species is best for you.

Otherwise, you can also take part in a community event – there are so many. (If not – organize one.)

It’s a lot of fun – and you always meet inspiring people.

4. help clean up your neighborhood

Beach and city clean-ups are the big new trend in outdoor activities. You’ll be doing something meaningful that’s good for the planet, meeting new people and staying fit at the same time.

And hey: all these benefits won’t cost you a penny! What’s not to like?

If you want to go one step further, you can also try “plogging”. This is a Swedish neologism of “jogging” and “plocka up” (collecting garbage).

In this activity, you jog along your favorite route and collect garbage in a small garbage bag. The a) helps Mother Earth and b) improves your workout by engaging your whole body.

To learn more about plogging and other amazing things, read our truly meaningful New Year’s resolutions. (Which you can really start at any time of year).

5. build an insect hotel

The last unique Earth Day activity you can do outside is to build an insect hotel. (Then call it “The Click A Tree Air-Bee-and-Bee”. Haha.)

As you know, insects are vital to our planet, including for the production of the food we all love.

Build them a brand new home. This can also be made entirely from used materials.

Here is a short video explaining how to build an insect hotel properly.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8J-lPepikg

Fantastic. There are lots of things you can do on Earth Day, don’t you think?

(Free) trees for Earth Day

We promised you (free) tree offers for Earth Day, and here they are.

Some of these offers are free, others are not – you can choose which ones you like best.

Ultimately, when done right, planting trees supports 16 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations!

Planting trees is therefore holistically the most sustainable thing you can do on Earth Day.

Here are our 4 favorite options:

1. #freetrees4you

Starting April 1, you can open one of the 26 virtual doors of the Arbor Day calendar to see which name gets to plant a free tree.

People with this chosen first name can then plant their free tree via Click A Tree’s Universal Impact Platform. The platform allows you to track the positive effects of your tree*.

Even if your name wasn’t chosen for this Arbor Day campaign, you can still help reforest the planet by forwarding the Arbor Day calendar to a person with that name.

Helping the earth to heal is a task for us all. That’s why Click A Tree has launched the #freetree4you campaign.

To be the first to find out which names get to plant free trees, follow our Instagram page.

2nd free tree for Earth Day

Go for a walk in the forest and collect some tree seeds. These trees are already growing in your area and are therefore already adapted to the local conditions.

Plant them in your garden, your neighborhood or the nearest community forest.

2. support the local economy

Contact your local nursery. They know which tree is best for your area – and how to care for it so that it grows into a large, healthy tree.

3. a global tree for Earth Day

Plant your Earth Day tree right here, right now. What’s stopping you?

Trees are one of the most sustainable gifts. So if you don’t plant the tree for yourself, you can always dedicate it to someone special.

Pro tip: The nice thing is that it’s not a question of either – or. You can follow all 3 suggestions and plant as many trees as you like for Earth Day. Mother Nature will thank you!

Now to you

Have you heard about Arbor Day and would like to find out what exactly this day is all about and how you can celebrate it?

Then you’ve come to the right place: we’ve summarized everything you need to know in our ultimate guide to Arbor Day.

Let’s dive straight into the day of the trees.

What is the day of the tree?

Before we look at how tree love can be celebrated, let’s first tell you what Arbor Day actually is.

In the simplest sense, Arbor Day is a day when we celebrate trees.

We don’t want to bore you with a long philosophical monologue about the importance of trees (although our founder Chris would really love that!).

Thank you for the picture, Maja!

So let’s just say: Arbor Day is the perfect opportunity to let out the tree hugger in you.

So, now you know what the day of the tree is. But do you know when it is?

When is the day of the tree?

In Germany, Arbor Day is celebrated every year on April 25.

Did you know that this decade is very important for the environment? Some of the world’s brightest scientists are warning that now is our last chance to save our planet.

In this article about the “Twentrees” (the decade that will save our planet), you can find out more about why it is still worth remaining optimistic and what role trees play in climate change.

Tree love around the world – When is Arbor Day in other countries?

The date of Arbor Day varies in different countries. Some countries even celebrate trees for whole weeks!

Here is a rough overview of the dates on which Arbor Day is celebrated in other countries.

Australia

In Australia, Arbor Day is celebrated on June 20.

And because Australians really understand the importance of trees (have you ever been to the outback?!), they also celebrate a National Tree Day (on the last Sunday in July) and a National Schools Tree Day (on the last Friday in July), in addition to Arbor Day.

And hey, if that’s not enough, the Australian state of Victoria is celebrating a whole week of trees.

Canada

Let’s plant a tree, shall we?

Canadians celebrate their National Forest Week during the last full week in September.

The actual day of the tree is on the last Wednesday in September (also known as Maple Leaf Day in Canada).

And then there are a few states that love trees so much that they simply need a few extra days.

Ontario celebrates Tree Week from the last Friday in April to the last Sunday in May.

Prince Edward Island marks its Arbor Day on the third Friday in May, during Arbor Week.

And Calgary celebrates trees on the first Thursday in May.

USA

In the USA, National Arbor Day is always celebrated on the last Friday in April.

The very first Arbor Day was celebrated in the USA on April 10.

The current date for Arbor Day was not decided until 1970. At the 100. To mark the 50th anniversary, President Richard Nixon set the date for Arbor Day for the last Friday in April.

Great Britain

In the UK, National Tree Week is usually around the end of November.

The story of the day of the tree

In Germany, the first official Arbor Day was celebrated on April 25, 1952.

On this day, Federal President Theodor Heuss and the President of the German Forest Protection Association (SDW), Federal Minister Robert Lehr, planted a maple tree in Bonn’s Hofgarten.

Since then, Arbor Day has been celebrated on the same day every year and millions of trees have been planted by nature lovers throughout Germany over the past 70 years.

But that’s enough history now! Now it’s time for our fun facts and 12 super activities to celebrate Arbor Day!

Three fun facts about the Day of the Tree

So, now all the statistics and figures are out of the way. And because we don’t just make sustainability easy at Click A Tree, but fun too, here are three day of the tree fun facts.

1. the oldest day of the tree in the world

The oldest Arbor Day in the world is not the one in the United States, as so many people would assume. Although it was founded in 1872 and is therefore already 150 venerable years old, the oldest Day of the Tree was celebrated in Mondoñedo in Spain in 1594.

2. the oldest tree in the world

Exactly which tree is the oldest tree in the world varies from time to time. However, the spruces in the northern Swedish mountains are definitely among the oldest known trees. Twenty of them are estimated by scientists at Umeå University to be over 8,000 years old.

The North American Scots pine “Sinus aristata var.longaeva” is estimated to be only a comparatively young 4000 to 5000 years old.

This might also interest you: The 12 tallest, oldest, largest and rarest trees in the world

3. worldwide names for the day of the tree

“Day of the tree” describes it quite well. Other countries have gotten creative, so you can also celebrate, for example, ‘Tree Loving Week’ in Korea, ‘The Nation Festival of Tree Planting’ in India and ‘The Greening Week’ in Japan.

Activities for the Day of the Tree

The theory is now complete, are you ready to celebrate?

The most common activity on Arbor Day is, of course, planting trees.

But if, for some reason, you can’t plant trees yourself this year, here are a few dozen activities – both indoor and outdoor – to help you celebrate Arbor Day in a different way.

Seven fun ideas for celebrating Arbor Day at home

Whether it’s because of a virus, bad weather or any other reason, if you’re celebrating Arbor Day at home this year, here are the nine coolest Arbor Day activities that don’t require you to wear pants.

1. be surprised by these 15 fantastic forest facts

There are so many things we can learn from forests and trees. These facts about the forest ecosystem are guaranteed to fascinate you.

2. plant a tree for yourself, the planet or your favorite person

Trees stand for everything that is good. Plant a tree from the couch with our help and dedicate it to someone you really, really like.

3. change your laptop/mobile phone background to a great tree picture

Remind yourself of the beauty (and importance!) of trees every day with a great new tree wallpaper for your laptop or phone.

You can either photograph it yourself or take inspiration from Maja’s tree gallery. Maja is a long-time supporter of Click A Tree and loves taking photos of trees.

4. find out about your favorite tree

Do you already know all his superpowers? Trees can do so much more than just look beautiful and provide shade. One of our favorite trees is the baobab, as it is a real all-rounder.

Here are 7 amazing facts about the baobab tree.

5. read Peter Wohlleben’s book “The secret life of trees”

How often have you walked past a tree, perhaps even admired it, without paying attention to what is actually going on inside? You’re missing out!

Trees have so much more to offer than we can see from the outside. Did you know, for example, that trees are social creatures?

In The Secret Life of Trees, forester and author Peter Wohlleben takes you into the world of trees and shows you how similar trees and people are.

6. start a tree painting competition with your loved ones

It’s as simple as it sounds. Who can paint the most beautiful / colorful / funniest tree?

We would love you to share your masterpieces with us on Instagram!

7. Netflix & Chill

Take a virtual walk through your nearest arboretum or watch one of the incredible tree documentaries you can find online.

Here is our recommendation:

Or would you prefer to spend Arbor Day with your nature-loving friends? Then you should share this article with them so you can choose a fun activity together for Arbor Day.

Five outdoor activities on Arbor Day

Want to spend the day outside? Super! Many people plant trees today, but there are of course other activities you can do on Arbor Day.

1. get a tree tattoo

If you really love trees, there’s no better day than today to get a classy tree tattoo. Of course, this is only for the tattoo lovers among us.

For inspiration, we’ve already asked our community around the world to show us their favorite tree tattoos and explain their meaning.

2. plant your own tree

Like so many people on this Arbor Day, you too can plant your own tree.

If you have enough space in your garden, great! Call your local nursery and find out which tree species is best for you.

In case you don’t have enough space in your garden, you could contact your local environmental champions and ask about community events on Arbor Day. Join in – it’s really fun and you get to meet cool new people!

And, if there are no events near you, you can organize your own. With a little help, it’s easier than you think.

3. dance around a tree and sing funny tree songs (preferably with your loved ones)

Find a tree with enough space around it to start a wild tree dance session.

Come up with unique lyrics to celebrate the tree. Let your love for nature out openly and uncensored.

4. hug a tree. Take a photo. Post it on Instagram and tag us.

Instagram needs more tree pictures – definitely!

Tag @clickatree. And add the hashtags #tagdesbaumes and #twentrees.

5. organize a tree treasure hunt (“Tree-sure Hunt”)

How about a bit of geocaching action on Arbor Day? Or a good old-fashioned “Tree-sure Hunt”, without iPads and smartphones.

Anything is possible with a little creativity.

Helping the earth to heal is a task for us all. That’s why Click A Tree has launched the #freetree4you campaign.

By planting these trees, you are not only combating climate change, but also creating jobs, wildlife habitats and much more.

To be the first to find out which names get to plant free trees, follow our Instagram page.

Have you ever visited Stonehenge? One of the oldest and most breathtaking monuments in Europe, the oldest parts of Stonehenge are 5000 years old. Imagine you could meet someone from that time… Impossible? Not at all!

Trees as old as Stonehenge are still alive today. For some trees, a few thousand years is really hardly an age. And if you think that’s incredible, wait until you hear about the world’s largest banyan tree, whose canopy casts shade over an area larger than six soccer pitches.

Read on to discover fabulous facts from the fascinating world of trees. We introduce you to trees with legendary status: The tallest, oldest, largest and rarest trees in the world.

The tallest tree in the world

Hyperion: The Highest

Source: Getty Images

With a height of 116.07 m, Hyperion is officially the tallest tree in the world1. Its name comes from the Greek Titan Hyperion. The giant coast redwood is still growing: when the tree was first discovered in 2006, it measured “only” 115.55 meters.

Coast redwoods are the tallest living things in the world. The forest in the Redwood National Park in California, where Hyperion lives, is also home to the second tallest tree in the world: Helios (son of the Titan Hyperion) is 114.95 m high2.

Centurion: The 100. Giant

Source: https://www.huonvalleyescapes.net/centurion-the-worlds-tallest-flowering-tree.html

The Centurion originally got its name because it was the 100th Centurion. was a huge tree that was measured by forestry officials on the south coast of Tasmania. He is also a centurion in his height. The 400-year-old eucalyptus tree is 100.5 meters tall, making it the tallest tree in the southern hemisphere3.

The fact that the Centurion has survived so many years of droughts and fires is nothing short of a miracle. Devastating bushfires claimed the lives of two giant eucalyptus trees growing in the same forest in 2019.

The Menara: the tallest tree in Asia

Source: https://www.mysabah.com/wordpress/tallest-tropical-tree-in-the-world/

Another forest giant was discovered in 2019: the Menara (the “tower” in Malay) is 100.8 meters high. It is a yellow meranti, a tree species that is famous for its height and is one of the most endangered trees in Asia. Due to deforestation, it is only found in small parts of Borneo, the Malay Peninsula and Thailand.

The yellow meranti trees, which are also considered the largest flowering plants in the world, provide food and shelter for over 1000 species4. Some of them, such as the orangutan, the forest elephant and the clouded leopard, are themselves highly endangered.

The oldest tree in the world

Methuselah: A venerable age of 4854 years

A witness from the era of the Druids, aptly named Methuselah, is officially the oldest tree in the world. Methuselah belongs to a small stand of ancient Great Basin bristlecone pines in the White Mountains of California.

The secret of his old age? Slow life. Due to the harsh conditions in the mountains, these bristlecone pines are among the slowest growing trees. For this reason, their wood is incredibly dense. This makes it resistant to insects, fungi, rot and erosion.

Alerce Milenario: The great-grandfather tree

Source: https://www.aa.com.tr/en/pg/photo-gallery/defying-ages-2-600-year-old-larch-tree-in-argentina-still-thrives

Despite its venerable age, Methuselah may not be the oldest tree in the world after all. An alerce tree in Chile, affectionately titled Gran Abuelo (great-grandfather), could be up to 5484 years old5.

This is the estimate of environmental scientist Jonathan Barichivich, who used computer modeling to date a small sample from the ancient Alerce tribe. Asked why he didn’t take a larger sample to determine the age of Gran Abuelo, Barichivich said: “It’s about protecting the tree, not about making headlines or breaking records.”

Pando: The oldest clonal trees

Source: https://thetreeographer.com/2017/11/22/pando-aspen/

The title for the oldest organism in the world goes to Pando, a colony of quaking aspens in the Fishlake National Forest in Utah. Also known as the “Trembling Giant”, it is estimated that the Pando colony is at least 25,000 years old.

At least this is the age of the original “Pando” poplar. Today, the organism has grown to 48,000 trees, which are all genetically identical and share a single root system. The colony covers 43 hectares, which also makes Pando one of the largest organisms in the world6.

Largest tree in the world

General Sherman: Largest tree in the world

Source: Gerhard Zwerger-Schoner/Getty Images

The largest tree in the world is the Giant Sequoia, known as General Sherman. With its height of 84 m and a massive volume of 1487 cubic meters, General Sherman was declared the largest tree in the world after the Crannell Creek Giant, a coastal redwood in California, was illegally felled in the 1940s7.

Just a few months ago, General Sherman and other redwood trees had to be wrapped in fire-retardant foil to protect them from the devastating forest fires that ravaged large parts of California’s forests.

Árbol del Tule: The tree (trunk) of life

With a trunk circumference of 31.1 m, General Sherman may not cut a slender figure, but the Árbol del Tule in Oaxaca, Mexico is hot competition for the title of ‘Largest Tree in the World’. With a circumference of 36.2 to 49 m, 60 people can wrap their arms around its trunk at the same time for the largest Tree Hug in the world8!

El Tule is sacred to the Mexican Zapotec culture and is estimated to be at least 1400 years old. Its nickname “Tree of Life” comes from the fact that the natural twists and turns of its gnarled trunk form images of jaguars and elephants.

Thimmamma Marrimanu: A tree as big as a forest

Source: https://www.trawell.in/andhra/anantapur/thimmamma-marrimanu

Thimmamma Marrimanu is an ancient banyan tree in the arid region of Andhra Pradesh in India. Thimmamma Marrimanu, estimated to be at least 660 years old, has reached a truly impressive size. Its canopy measures 8 hectares9 – more than six soccer pitches put together – a size that truly deserves the title “largest tree in the world”.

Named after a Hindu legend, Thimmamma Marrimanu attracts pilgrims from all over India. The tree, which brings life to the driest part of the country, has become a symbol of fertility and is said to provide positive energy.

Aren’t these trees simply breathtaking? Do you think we need more of them? Plant trees here.

Rarest tree in the world

Three Kings Kaikomako: Rarest tree of all

Source: https://www.citscihub.nz/Phil_Bendle_Collection:Pennantia_baylisiana_(Three_Kings_Kaikomako)

The Three Kings Kaikomako is the rarest tree in the world. Only one tree has ever been found in the wild. This is on Three Kings Island off the coast of New Zealand, which is where the name comes from.

Fortunately for the Kaikomako tree species, the tree on Three Kings Island is female. After decades, scientists have recently succeeded in finding a way to pollinate the tree10. The growing seedlings are not yet ready to be planted in the wild, but at least the rarest tree is no longer the last of its kind.

Woods Cycad: The loneliest tree in the world

Source: https://www.atlasobscura.com/places/wood-s-cycad

Woods Cycad was once one of the most widespread trees in the world. That was over 145 million years ago, when the dinosaurs still lived on earth. Today, unfortunately, it is not only the rarest tree in the world, but also the loneliest.

A single tree was found in South Africa in 1895 and then immediately lost again. A small piece of this survived and is now growing in the Royal Botanic Gardens in London11. No other specimens were ever found. For this reason, Woods Cycad really could be the loneliest tree in the world.

Baobab: A tree like no other

Baobab trees are like the trees in a legend: They are ancient, massive and magical. Baobab trees grow in the driest regions and support people, animals and plants.

Nevertheless, the baobab could soon become one of the rarest trees due to climate change and deforestation. Of 9 baobab species, 3 are threatened with extinction and 3 are endangered12. For this reason, the baobab is one of the trees planted in our reforestation project in Ghana.

Trees: ancient, huge, rare and totally fascinating

We hope you enjoyed our article about these absolute legends of the fascinating world of trees. Do you have a special tree that is your favorite? Which one impresses you the most: the tallest or the oldest tree? All of them? Yes, we think so too!

All trees are special because they make the world a better place. Do you want to plant more? Super. Click here and in less than 5 minutes you will have planted trees.

Green Friday: the sustainable alternative to Black Friday

Shopping tip and how to make this day even greener

Share with your community on LinkedIn now:

You’ve probably heard of Black Friday, but have you heard of its cool sibling, Green Friday?

No? No problem, we’ll introduce you to the Friday siblings today. We also reveal sustainable shopping tips and show you how to make your Green Friday even greener.

You may have only come here for one thing, but we’ll give you everything. So, let’s get down to business!

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday is the unofficial name for the day after Thanksgiving, which is celebrated on the last Thursday in November. While Black Friday heralds the Christmas season, there’s a pretty funny story behind it.

Since the Thanksgiving holiday falls on a Thursday, many employees in the 1950s called in sick the next day. Of course, if the holiday falls on a Thursday, who wouldn’t call in sick the next day to enjoy a four-day weekend? (Pssst…if you see my boss, please tell him I looked really sick the last time you saw me).

In any case, people called in sick to enjoy the long weekend, but also to be able to start their Christmas shopping in time. The stores naturally noticed the increase in sales and therefore started to advertise various offers to attract shoppers into their stores.

And to this day, Black Friday is one of the best sales days of the year.

The dark side of Black Friday

Black Friday is very valuable for many companies. From an ecological point of view, it is Friday with the darkest shades of black due to its current extent.

Black Friday brings with it many problems, but today we will only address one of these negative aspects.

The attractive Black Friday discounts make it difficult to look away, which naturally leads to impulsive purchases that often result in buying things you don’t actually need.

This then leads to waste and unnecessary CO2 emissions. Which is not so good for our planet.

At Click A Tree, however, we prefer to focus on the positive and find solutions to existing problems.

But don’t worry, we’re not telling you to stop shopping and buying presents. Because, as with everything, there is also a cool sustainable solution for Black Friday:

Green Friday enters the scene.

What is Green Friday?

(As I write this, I’m imagining you singing Summer Nights from Grease: “Tell me more, tell me more. How much dough did he spend? Tell me more, tell me more. ” And now that you have a catchy tune, let’s move on to the actual article).

In 2015, the first ideas for Green Friday¹ were formed as a counter-movement to Black Friday. Instead of shopping until they “drop”, Green Friday supporters encourage people to shop more mindfully and sustainably.

It’s as simple as that: Before you buy something, just take a moment to think about whether you really want and need this item.

While the Green Friday movement encourages people to shop more sustainably, they also motivate people to spend more time with their loved ones. Yes, you guessed it, in the green countryside.

So, yes, you can still go shopping (more on special Green Friday deals below). But you can also do much more.

Can I still shop on (Black) Green Friday?

We know how good it feels to buy gifts for yourself and your loved ones. So we would never tell you to stop. It just feels too good.

And to be honest, these Black / Green Friday discounts are making it really hard not to strike.

However, we recommend that you shop sustainably. Which is very easy these days, as many stores follow criteria to offer sustainable products.

And just as there are Black Friday offers, there are also special Green Friday offers (more on this below).

1 trick on how to make Black Friday green

I’m sure you know what happens when you go shopping hungry? You buy much more than you actually wanted.

A similar principle applies to Black Friday: before you enter the (online) store, you should know what you want to buy. This not only saves you time, but also means you only buy the items that are actually on the list.

It’s best to start your shopping list a month before Green Friday and not add anything new to the list a week beforehand. This way you can be sure that you only buy things that you really want.

And while you’re thinking about what to buy: check out our list of 20 sustainable gift ideas – it even includes the perfect surprise for people who say they don’t need anything.

Pro tip: Take 25% of the money you saved on Black / Green Friday deals and tip the letter carrier. Invest 50% in saving the planet and planting trees.

Then use the remaining 25% to treat yourself to a delicious meal or something similar. Enjoy it with a clear conscience, because it costs you nothing. Since it’s the money you’ve saved while doing a lot of good things – therefore you really deserve a good meal.

And look, we can actually learn a thing or two from the British royal family, as Prince Charles’ mantra is “buy once, buy well”². We agree, because this is a really good way to shop sustainably.

How to make your Green Friday even greener

What does it look like? Have we convinced you to switch to Green Friday?

There’s a trick to make this day even greener: plant a tree for every product you buy on Green Friday. By planting trees for your purchases, you are making the planet greener at the same time.

Of course, it’s not just trees that you plant. These trees become part of a self-sufficient ecosystem that creates habitats for animals and at the same time provides safe food sources for the local people.

Every tree counts. Click here and plant trees.

What can I do on Green Friday if I don’t want to shop?

The state of Colorado in the USA has called “Fresh Air Friday” into the world³ – go outside into the forest, to a park, to the mountains, visit a nearby lake or similar.

Green Friday can’t get any greener than when you spend it outside in nature.

If you want to go one step further, go plogging. (Plogging is a Swedish invention and means “jogging and picking up garbage”). If you want, you can also plog without the actual jogging part. Mother Nature will love you for it.

It’s great for you, it’s great for the planet and it’s great for your wallet. (Note: You can always tip the letter carrier next time. And you can plant another tree now).

Thank you for being here and joining the Green Friday movement, together we are making the planet a better place.

When is Green Friday?

Green Friday 2022 is like Black Friday 2022 on November 25.

What can you do now?

If you like the idea of Green Friday, share this article with your friends and acquaintances so that they can find out about this cool movement too.

Alone we are strong, together we are even stronger. And together we can save the planet.

5 exciting facts about elephants: Are they the secret environmentalists?

Share with your community on LinkedIn now:

There may be arguments between cat people and dog people, but there’s no doubt that elephants are awesome!

Although they are these large and majestic animals, they seem so vulnerable and sensitive at the same time. Did you know that elephants are not only fascinating to look at? We really do benefit from our pachyderms in so many ways.

Did you know that elephants are natural environmentalists? Without realizing it, these environmentally friendly mammals are responsible for 35% of natural seed germination.

Find out what other talents they have, more fun facts about elephants and one not so fun fact.

Five fun facts about elephants: Eco-Edition

If a herd of elephants were writing this article, they would call us immediately to tell us even more elephant facts; but enough of our elephant jokes, these scientific findings will have to suffice for now.

Check out these facts about elephants!

Elephant fact #1: Elephant poo is nature’s greatest gardener

Elephants are naturally draft animals and move in herds (I wonder how an elephant family dinner goes, everyone has to eat a ton).

As the group traverses the landscape and eats their favorite snacks, they excrete seeds with built-in fertilizer. If there is a lack of elephant dung in the areas, there is also a lack of diversity. These big animals really know how to make a place look green.

All these excreted seeds stimulate the soil and roots and increase carbon storage, making it easier for the world to breathe.

Do you know an elephant lover? Share these fun facts about elephants with them.

Elephant fact #2: They recycle old forests

Would you describe yourself as a bull in a china store? Then you have something in common with these pachyderms.

Although they don’t want to knock down trees, they are just, well, clumsy. As they stumble on their way, they inadvertently clear habitat to increase the fertility of the soil so that new life can grow back.

So, if a tree falls in the forest and there are only elephants around, does it make a noise?

Elephant fact #3: You have the best nose

Which animal has the strongest sense of smell? You would never guess it because their trunks are so long, but the answer is: elephants!

According to Phys, “elephant noses are five times stronger than human noses, twice as strong as dog noses and even stronger than the previously known record holder in the animal kingdom: rats.”¹

With that kind of sleuthing power, it’s no surprise that they can uncover underground water sources in times of need. The safari animals owe them a letter of thanks.

Elephant fact #4: They are super smart

Elephants are among the smartest animals on the planet and are very similar to humans in many ways. They form family structures, teach survival skills and have complex thinking.

Alongside human-like tracks, they are an integral part of the safari animal world. They attract attention and tourism, which gives the countries an additional economic advantage for elephant conservation.

A big dream of many people is to experience their elegance in the wild (in protected areas, of course), which helps fund elephant conservation initiatives. They symbolize many large and small animals.

Do you agree that we need to protect these wonderful animals? Help us to create a habitat by planting a tree.

Elephant fact #5: They teach us about medicine

Age can be a terror, can’t it? Not just for people.

Scientific evidence has shown that elephants, as similar as they are to us, have many of the health problems we have as we get older (it’s a shame to have that in common, sorry elephants). Stanford University is even planning to model hearing aids on the hearing of elephants.²

But that’s not all, they also have a body mechanism called ‘extended knee posture’, which means they will encounter similar joint problems.

Add in the risk of osteoarthritis and cardiovascular problems, and these big boys need an insurance plan!

As you can see, the pachyderms are extremely important for our planet. It is obvious that they have to let go sometimes. Their playtime is not too different from human children. See for yourself.

Can you tell the difference between an Asian and an African elephant?

Imagine waking up in a foreign country and having to find out which continent you are on. And the only indicator you see is an elephant. Could you tell the Asian elephant from the African elephant?

No? You are not alone. Let’s look at some of the most visible indicators together.

Would you like to find out more about our project in Thailand and how we create habitats for pachyderms? Then take a look here:

The not-so-funny elephant fact

Would you ever have thought that you are quite similar to these majestic animals? Before you go, we need to talk about the only not-so-fun fact.

What are some of the biggest threats to elephants in everyday life?

Of course, poachers are one of the biggest threats, as they hunt elephants for the illegal ivory trade. Many organizations and countries are combating this violent culture of trafficking by hiring law enforcement to keep watch in wildlife sanctuaries or by bringing the problem to the public’s attention.

Habitat destruction and habitat displacement is still the most common cause of the decline in elephant births. These mammals are forced into uninhabited areas where it is unsafe for them to raise young and far from their natural food source and vegetation.

There are currently only 20,000 to 40,000 Asian elephants left, which corresponds to a decline of 50 percent in the last 75 years. At the beginning of the 20th century, there were more than 100,000 wild elephants in Thailand. Today there are only 3,000 to 4,000.

These figures are scarce, but the positive contributions that elephants make to the environment are enormous.

Help us to protect these beautiful pachyderms

As mentioned above, most of the decline is due to habitat destruction, so we have launched a habitat creation initiative for elephants called Trees for Tuskers. To not only raise awareness, but to do our part to create a safe place for our great environmentalists.

It’s a big tusk, so we need all the help we can get! Plant a tree and help us create habitat for tuskers:

Replanting, education and outreach are the only ways to spark a recovery and protect our beloved elephants.

Let’s grow valuable habitat for these gentle giants together. They deserve it for everything they give back to us. Thank you for your support!

Tell your friends about these fantastic elephant facts and how we can protect them.

7 amazing facts about the baobab tree

That will surprise you

Share with your community on LinkedIn now:

Have you seen this strange tree? What strange tree? Oh, that strange tree with the superpowers? Yes, exactly that one! It may look like the strangest tree of all, but the baobab is a real superhero among trees.

Would you like to know what is so special about baobabs?

The baobab tree is one of the most useful trees in the world. Every part is amazing in its characteristics and benefits – from its young leaves and seeds to its old hollowed-out trunk.

Did you know that baobabs live for thousands of years and support entire ecosystems?

Read on to discover 7 amazing facts about these remarkable trees!

1. where do baobabs grow?

There are 9 species of baobabs. Six of them grow only in Madagascar, two are found in large parts of Africa, and one baobab species has made it as far as Australia.

Opinions differ as to exactly when this happened, but it is known that baobabs have been around since the time of the dinosaurs 200 million years ago!

2. baobabs are among the longest-lived trees

Baobabs can live for thousands of years. The oldest known baobab tree was the Panke baobab tree in Zimbabwe, which is 2450 years old¹.

Baobabs only have very weak annual rings. Radiocarbon dating* is therefore used to determine their age.

3. baobabs are record-breakingly large

The largest species of baobab is the African baobab (Adansonia digitata). According to the Guinness Book of Records, the largest living baobab tree is the Sagole Big Tree in South Africa.

It measures a whopping 60.6 square meters at its base, has a height of 19.8 m and an above-ground dry mass estimated at 54 tons².

4. baobabs are the trees of life

Baobabs can store large quantities of fresh water in their extraordinary trunks. This makes them real lifesavers in times of water shortage.

It enables the baobab tree to produce nutritious fruit even in the driest years. This is why the baobab tree is also known as the tree of life.

Would you like to grow your own super tree? You can! The baobab is one of the trees that Click A Tree plants as part of our work in Ghana.

Each contribution plants really useful trees like the baobab tree, which will provide the community with water, shade and a rich harvest of fruit in the years to come.

You can find out more about our tree planting project in Ghana here.

5. baobab fruits are a superfood

Baobab fruits can be used both fresh and dried. They are super nutritious, especially in their dried form, which is sold as a powder.

The fruit powder does not need any preservatives or artificial processes to stay fresh for 2 years³! This is great news because the baobab fruit is an excellent source of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals and fiber.

Baobab fruits are a superfood. They contain 6 times more vitamin C than oranges and 6 times more potassium than bananas.

The fruit, leaves, bark and seeds of the baobab tree have powerful health benefits and are traditionally used to treat illnesses, reduce fever and stimulate the immune system.

Your friends should hear about this superfood too? Share this article with them:

6. baobab seed oil for skin and hair beauty

The oil pressed from baobab seeds has long been a popular ingredient in natural skin and hair care products.

Baobab seed oil is intensely moisturizing and contains linoleic, linolenic and omega-3 fatty acids, which help to soothe dry and irritated skin⁴.

Baobab seed oil is also naturally insect repellent!

7. baobabs are crucial parts of the ecosystem

Baobabs play a major role in the ecosystem of the African dry savannahs. Firstly, they help to keep the soil moist, slow down soil erosion and recycle important nutrients.

Secondly, hundreds of animals find food, water and shelter in baobabs. Elephants eat the bark for moisture when there is no water nearby.

They also eat the fruit and in return help the baobab tree to distribute its seeds.

Baobab – a tree like no other

Baobabs are really something special, as there are over 300 known uses for their products. From a source of food and shelter to cosmetic products and medicines, baobabs are essential not only for humans but also for animals and other plants.

After all, these forest giants had over 200 million years to become super trees!

*The ¹⁴C method– also known as radiocarbon dating or the radiocarbon method – is not only used by archaeologists to determine the age of finds. Researchers are also using this method to investigate the global carbon cycle. It is based on the decay of a certain carbon isotope that is formed in the upper layers of the atmosphere and is later absorbed by all living creatures and the oceans on Earth.⁵

If breathing is as important to you as it is to us, you’ll love these simple tips for protecting trees. You don’t even have to overturn your entire life!

Who would have thought that it could be so easy to save trees from dying?

“Do you think I can do more than just recycle?” Yes, but don’t worry, you don’t have to completely change your life to become a forest hippie; all it takes is being more aware of the everyday choices you make.

Once you understand your consumption habits and impact, you have the power to have a big impact on the world around you. Win-win for you and the environment!

Here at Click A Tree, we understand that protecting trees is more important than felling and replanting. Reforestation is beneficial, but works best in conjunction with less deforestation.

As the years pass and more and more people wake up to the growing climate pressures, we are learning more productive ways to preserve our nation’s most precious natural resource, the lungs of our planet and the largest carbon sink; our trees!

And now for the best and easiest hacks on how to save trees.

Protect trees hack #1: Fabric, scissors, paper?

This cheat code saves money and gives trees a chance to live.

Using reusable towels and kitchen cloths is cost-friendly and usually does a better job anyway.

Paper towels need to be multi-layered to do the same job that an eco-friendly kitchen towel can do; work smarter, not harder.

Protect trees hack #2: Avoid wasting paper

Around 1 billion trees are used for paper products every year.

While it may seem ideal to write love notes on a new sheet of paper, your eco-conscious loved one will surely appreciate a double-sided note made from recycled paper much more.

Some of our favorite tree protection tips are:

You think these tips are great and would like to receive even more sustainability tips directly in your mailbox. Sign up for our newsletter:

Protect trees hack #3: Donate books and furniture

When was the last time you picked up the books gathering dust on the shelves? I challenge you to donate a used book that you have read to open bookcases or a second hand store every month.

That desk rotting away in your garage is a feast for the eyes, isn’t it? Did you know that you can recycle MOST things?

Fun idea: organize a book swap among friends and start your new favorite story for free.

Furniture can be handed in to most second-hand dealers. Also check online to see which charities in your area will pick up your used furniture for free!

Some organizations will even repair and reuse your furniture in their charity homes. How good would it feel to save the trees and decorate a home for someone in need?

Protect trees hack #4: Watch where you step!

If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you’re a nature freak like us!

Have you ever been to your favorite nature destination months later, only to find it trampled and in poor condition?

Staying on the trail while hiking is an easy and mutually beneficial task for all nature lovers, and you’ll be doing the trees a favor.

When people leave migration routes, this can lead to erosion, root death, habitat destruction and more. To preserve our beautiful trails and wilderness, take the path that is more traveled.

Protect trees Hack #5: Eat less meat

Help! Cows are destroying our forests! The pigs are eating our trees!

That may be an exaggeration, but there is some truth in it. The cultivation of agricultural land is directly linked to deforestation, mainly because there is simply not enough space to accommodate the livestock.

In 2021, GreenPlanet reflects that 30% of habitable land (land that is not covered by ice) is reserved for livestock farming. If there is not enough land to produce the meat demand, the forests will have to go first to make more room. ¹

Plant protein is cheaper to produce and has a massively higher total yield.

Protect trees Hack #6: Recycle

Recycling doesn’t have to mean simply throwing the paper in a separate garbage can – you can reuse paper to wrap presents, when moving house or as papier-mâché.

If none of these secondary options suit you, just having a bin for waste paper is enough! Remember that all steps, big or small, are steps in the right direction to save trees from dying.

“A society is defined not only by what it creates, but also by what it refuses to destroy.” – John Sawhill

Protect trees hack #7: Consume wisely

Follow the woods

When buying new products, always look for the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) seal. The FSC ensures that every item you buy has been produced in an environmentally friendly way.

Be a panda

Bamboo can be produced and harvested in five years and fulfills the same function as trees. It is less harmful to the environment and even stronger than wood.

You can use bamboo in everything from paper products to furniture, the possibilities are truly endless.

Protect trees hack #8: Plant trees

Planting a tree is the most obvious component of our simple hacks.

If you plant a tree yourself, on a sunny day you will have the satisfaction of shade, greenery in your surroundings and a nice place to read a book underneath. Getting your hands dirty keeps the world clean.

If gardening isn’t your thing, allow Click A Tree to plant one in your name, easy!

Protect trees hack #9: opt for recycled products

Many brands now offer products made from recycled paper in their stock range. From notebooks to journals, boxes and sets – going green has never been so easy.

Look out for the green recycling logo on your purchase and rest assured that you have given a tree a second chance.

Share this article with your friends and let’s protect trees together!

Protect trees hack #10: Go outside

There’s nothing like falling in love with Mother Earth to inspire more passion to educate those around you about it! Posting images of the natural beauty of our world reminds us to preserve and care for it even more.

Pick up litter on your way to earn extra points and remember the most important quote about saving trees and our planet: “Just take pictures, leave only footprints.”

Do you like traveling? Then book through B’n’Tree and plant a tree with your booking – completely free of charge for you.

Simple hacks without changing your lifestyle

The smallest gestures are more effective than you think. Remember to control your consumption, tell others about it and do all you can to help our forests and families breathe cleaner.

As the Lorax once said: “I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees. I speak for the trees, because the trees have no tongue.”

Would you like to plant a tree? Sign up for our newsletter and we’ll plant a tree for you – you can even give it a name.

11 little-known reasons why we plant trees in the tropics

Share with your community on LinkedIn now:

What do you think of when you imagine trees in the tropics? Palm trees with a view of the sea? A huge piece of tropical rainforest? Probably a faraway place, very different from what you can see outside your window.

So why is Click A Tree focusing its efforts on the tropics? Why don’t we plant here in Germany or Europe? The answer is: We would like to carry out large-scale reforestation here in Germany, but…

There are good reasons why we invest time and effort in the reforestation of the tropics. Those from which we all benefit worldwide.

In this article, we explore 11 reasons why tropical reforestation is important and makes sense on a global scale.

1. reforestation of the tropics combats global climate change

Every tree planted contributes to climate protection. NASA estimates that tropical forests absorb 1.4 billion tons of harmful CO2 every year¹, which is about 2/3 of the CO2 produced by EU countries. This shows that the reforestation of the tropics is having a global impact.

Fact: Trees in the tropics grow very quickly because they do not need a winter break. By providing tropical trees with the right conditions to grow into forests, we can reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in our planet’s atmosphere in our immediate future.

2. planting trees in the tropics makes a big difference to local communities

A reforestation project must be well planned to be successful. Trees need constant care and attention in order to grow. At the same time, they should provide further value to the local community to ensure ongoing support.

At Click A Tree, we are aware of this fact. Our project in Ghana, for example, integrates syntropic agriculture. This means that our growing forests also serve as plantations, producing crops that the locals can eat and sell.

In this way, planting organizations create a substantial income for the local community and benefit the environment at the same time.

Your contribution makes a real difference – every tree you plant becomes part of a sustainable community project that provides jobs and educational opportunities in a country where these are rare.

Plant a tree today

3. we can plant more trees in the tropics

The financial planning of our projects is carried out with great care to ensure that we can plant as many trees of native varieties as possible. And which also offer the most ecological and economical advantages.

Fact: Planning and bureaucracy cost less in the tropics than in Germany. This gives us more money to pay our local employees well and plant trees that benefit the environment!

4. trees are more than a livelihood – they are a way of life

Farming and making a living from nature has been a way of life for countless generations for people in countries such as Ghana and the Philippines.

Economic factors, climate change and past political unrest have plunged many into poverty. Planting trees with Click A Tree helps local communities to restore their way of life.

In Ghana, every tree planted becomes part of a plantation that supports an entire community. This means that for local people, this is not just a 9-5 job, but the basis for an entire way of life.

5 Invest in the future – opportunities beyond reforestation

In areas where jobs are scarce, the opportunity to make something of yourself is valued above all else. It enables local people to build a future for themselves and their families.

For this reason, organizations that plant trees in the tropics do more than just let things grow in the ground.

In Ghana, the trees you plant support a local school for entrepreneurs, where young Ghanaians learn how to write business plans, conduct market research and find ways to market their products. There is no better gift than giving someone a future!

Fact: By planting treesin the tropics, you can support 16 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals.

6. plant trees in the tropics to combat desertification

We’ve all seen the headlines: Desertification is spreading as tropical forests disappear at an alarming rate, cut down to feed cattle or grow crops for export abroad.

We will not go into these topics in this article. The most important thing is that we can do something about it!

Fact: Trees prevent soil erosion, while helping to conserve soil nutrients and restore the water cycle.

Planting trees restores vital life support in drought-affected regions, supports sustainable ways of growing crops and actively combats desertification.

7. trees provide clean water for communities

Trees have an important water storage and purification function, as they absorb rain through their leaves and then slowly release it through their roots over time.

The roots stabilize the soil and provide much-needed moisture, which helps to grow food crops for the community.

Forests absorb heavy rainfall, prevent flooding and supply clean water through their roots.

8 Timely reforestation prevents climate migration

Climate migration occurs when a country can no longer feed its people due to climate change. Drought, followed by flooding, has already affected many countries around the world.

Trees help to prevent climate migration in two ways: they stabilize the soil, prevent erosion during dry periods and regulate nutrient runoff during heavy rainfall.

Combine this with their ability to absorb harmful CO2 to combat climate change and you have a superhero!

Fact: With every contribution that enables us to plant trees in the tropics, we can help to prevent climate migration.

9. plant trees in the tropics to save wildlife

The tropics are home to 78% of all animal and plant species on earth. Some are threatened with extinction and most are found in and around forests.

Because here they find shelter, water, food and places where they can raise their young. Just one wonderful tree like the baobab can make a big difference in the right place!

A single baobab tree provides life support for many animals and offers shelter, food and water in dry regions. With your help, we can plant more baobabs!

10. reforestation of the tropics protects the coasts

Mangrove forests form a vital barrier that protects endangered coasts from tropical storms. The roots of the trees prevent coastal erosion, while the forests themselves provide important protection for both animals and humans.

That is why we are dedicated to projects in the tropics, as well as our project in the Philippines.

With your contribution we can plant trees to plant more mangroves and strengthen this beautiful island.

11. mangrove forests support entire communities

Mangrove forests also play an important role in the economy of these islands. They not only protect important cultivation areas inland, but also provide a habitat for marine life.

For locals like Wilson Gastanes, the reforestation of the mangroves has restored a way of life they thought they had lost forever.

One of the reasons we plant trees in the tropics is because they make a real difference to people’s lives! How reforestation prevents climate migration: Read Wilson’s story here.

Why we plant trees in the tropics

The reason we plant trees in the tropics is because we have the opportunity to make a real difference to people’s lives and the environment.

By planting trees in the tropics, we can prevent climate migration, reduce poverty and give young people a future.

Seriously, projects that plant trees in the tropics can make a real difference in the world in a way we can hardly imagine here in Germany.

Fact: With your help, tropical reforestation can effectively prevent climate migration, reduce harmful CO2 in the Earth’s atmosphere, provide shelter for endangered animals and create a future for workers and their families.

This makes a tree a gift worth giving!

The 10 biggest climate change myths revealed

What it actually looks like

Climate change can be a sensitive issue. With all the misinformation, we thought you’d like to hear the cold, hot truth about common climate myths.

Are we really responsible for climate change?

Has the earth always been this hot, or is it just Leonardo Di Caprio and Gisele Bündchen?

Today we answer the most frequently asked questions about global warming, reveal the myths about climate change and clarify the realities of climate change.

We will no longer keep you from the truth. Let’s debunk the myths about climate change.

Climate change myth #1: “Humans are not responsible for climate change.”

As sad as it is, we can only point the finger at ourselves. Science has proven time and again that greenhouse gas rates have risen significantly over the last 30 years and that the average temperature of 1 degree Celsius is man-made.

At the same time, we are reducing our carbon sinks (forests) and replacing them with greenhouse gases (agriculture and industry). In addition, humans release various harmful heat-trapping gases into our atmosphere, such as CO2, methane, nitrous oxide and chlorofluorocarbons.

Climate change myth #2: “Carbon dioxide can’t be the cause of climate change – plants need it!”

Trees are like our cool aunt; but if you give the cool aunt too much to drink, she passes out. The same applies to plants. Put simply, forests can no longer absorb the record-breaking amount of carbon dioxide that we release every day.

The last time carbon ppm was this high, dinosaurs roamed the earth! Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? Yes, the carbon dioxide parts per million have not been this outstanding for over 800,000 years.

Climate change myth #3: “It’s so cold, there can’t be any global warming!”

The weather is short-term, the climate is long-term. The climate is observed over decades, weather experiments are predicted every week, hour by hour, second by second.

Global warming is causing more aggressive weather: heavier rainfall, deep floods, record highs and lows. Intense storms increase in intensity, hit harder and last longer.

Climate change myth #4: “The Earth’s climate has always been in a state of flux.”

This is the most realistic myth, but unfortunately it is still a myth. Even though the earth has always been in a state of constant change, today’s changes are accelerating in their natural cycles.

In contrast to the heating and cooling processes, which take hundreds and thousands of years, these temperature changes now happen in just a few decades.

“When I was a child, we had snow in winter!” Exactly grandma, exactly! The rate of temperature rise is 10 times faster than the rate studied from the mass extinction that took place over 56 million years ago and led to an alarming extinction of over 70% of land species and over 90% of marine life.

Climate change myth #5: “We have time to solve this problem.”

Believing that we have time is a false argument. We can currently see the effects of climate change by looking at the global rise in temperature, the rise in sea levels, the melting of the ice sheet, the advanced melting of snow and the increase in extreme weather storms.

The evidence is now before us as the current cycle continues. A majority of scientists claim that the damage to our planet will be irreversible if no major changes are made by 2030.

A good way to get involved is to support countries in their efforts to adopt sustainable business practices. The UN has published a list of 17 SDGs or “Sustainable Development Goals” that simply make sense. Find out what these are and how you can contribute to 16 of the 17 SDGs here.

Climate change myth #6: “Renewable energies are not economical.”

Contrary to popular belief, solar energy is cheaper than all alternatives to fossil fuels. In the past, consumers and businesses viewed renewable energy as a moneymaker aimed at ruining their fast production playgrounds.

Today’s world views renewable energy as a cost-effective way to reduce fossil fuel emissions while doing our planet and pocketbook a favor. For example, a kilowatt of electricity from fossil fuels costs an average of 12 cents, while one from solar energy costs 4 cents.

Climate change myth #7: “Animals can adapt to climate change just like us.”

Wrong. Have you seen the polar bears lately? The inhabitants of the Arctic suffer more than others when they have to watch layers of their habitat melt at an alarming rate.

The Arctic’s natural season is currently being accelerated; the ice is melting earlier and forming later each year. Being an Arctic mother now comes with a certain amount of drama, with increased stress from competing for land to raise young, hunt for food, etc.

In warmer climates, the effect still hits hard as mammals are forced to adapt or relocate in the face of habitat loss and human encroachment.

More animals were sighted in populated areas because they were driven out of their natural habitats. If you are curious about habitat creation and want to know what you can do, read our article “Planting trees in Thailand – How to create habitat for elephants”!

Would you like to help us create habitats for endangered animals? Plant a tree today.

Climate change myth #8: “The sky is blue. Where are all the greenhouse gases and smog?”

Put on your scientist hat, because we’re about to get technical.

Your eyes are working against you with a phenomenon called “Raleigh scattering”. Our eyes absorb violet and blue light more easily than red light. When light penetrates air and space, it interferes with surrounding particles such as gases, dust and water by being absorbed or reflected.

Gas is so small that it reflects light and bounces off surrounding particles, making the entire sky appear blue. If you were to fly into space, you would see the colors slowly fade to a pale color as soon as the sun’s red tones counter the blue. Oh, science!

Climate change myth #9: “Climate change will destroy the world by 2030.”

This is a misinterpreted quote published in the 2018 IPCC report. The actual quote is as follows:

“The report states that limiting global warming to 1.5°C would require ‘rapid and far-reaching’ changes in land, energy, industry, buildings, transport and cities. Net man-made global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) would need to fall by about 45 percent from 2010 levels by 2030 and reach ‘net zero’ by 2050.”

It was therefore more of a call to action than an impending doom. Although there is still no doubt that we need to greatly reduce our CO2 emissions or deal with a sharp rise in temperature (potentially threatening cities at sea level), we are not going to die any time soon.

With Click A Tree, you can do your bit for change with our tree planting missions. Help us plant 1 million trees this year .

Climate change myth #10: “It’s too late to solve this problem!”

The best myth on this list to debunk – it’s NEVER too late. We have had the technology to reduce our CO2 emissions to zero for a number of years, but large companies, governments, energy companies and major consumers need to make the switch. The 2050 net-zero emissions target is very achievable.

As a consumer, you can make small decisions to make the world around you greener. Your purchasing habits and decisions determine what the future will look like.

The climate is changing, are you?

Climate change is here. And although we receive a lot of negative news, we still have a chance to make a difference.

It is important to debunk the climate change myths and move the planet into a green movement. We believe that every step counts and telling others about these myths is a good first step:
